Okay I am a complete newbie to recording and I have some questions that I hope someone will answer without berating me (too bad anyway). I know what some effects are for and how to use them (chorus reverb flange ect..). But as for some of the others I don't even know what they are for let alone how to use them. Could someone tell me how and you would use (gate, limiter, and compression). Thank you in advance for your help and remember no belittling without a helpful answer first :)

Ok, compression is used to limit the dynamic range of audio, or certain sections of the audio, in a precise way.

On a bass track, for example, you can use compression to lower the volume of notes that are too loud relative to the rest of the track, and using makeup gain you can raise the volume of notes that are too soft relative to the rest of the track.

With the attack and release controls, you can raise/lower any part of the dynamic envelope, such as the initial attack, sustain or body, and release.

Ok, who's got gating and limiting?
