Ok I would like to start a home studio. I want it to be digital, but I don't know where to start or what to buy or ready. Help.

You can get a DAW which is a self-contained unit for recording and mixing using a hard drive for information storage, manipulation, and retrival. Usually has some sort of on-board signal processing but not always.

You can use your computer with a decent recording quality sound card and appropriate software.

You can buy a digital mixer and a digital stand alone recorder either digital tape based or hard disc based with as many as 24 tracks. This approach usually yields the best results but is sometimes the most expensive. Outboard signal processing is usually performed either with hardware rack units or computer based effects upon mixdown.

Ya pays yer money and ya takes yer choice.

Someone more familiar with these formats will be along soon to clear up any specific questions.

if you have a good computer, you can use it........get a multi-tracking program and go from there

Insufficient data, dude. First name every computer, every instrument, every amp, speaker, stereo, or set of headphones you own, right down to the walkman. Then tell us what kind of room or rooms you have available to work with. Then tell us what kind of music and instruments you want to record. Then tell us how much money you can throw at it. Then maybe people here can try to answer your question. What you've said is, "I want to buy some tools, where do I start?" So are you a jeweler or a truck mechanic?- Richie
