my band would like to start using original samples in our music and be able to play them live too. I dont know where to start as this is something new to us. If anyone can help, I would appreciate it. thanks

I wiould suggest you record any sound that interest you to a DAT or to a computer and then manipulate them using a computer or a workstaion. You can chabge them with effects like time, pitch,
EQ etc...

To trigger them live I would use a Sampler
or at least use a sequencer that was pre recorded.

A sampler creates a "patch" out of a short blip of sound. This is triggered by a sequencer (which stores and plays the instructions to the synthesizer) which can be hooked to a synthesizer, a PC with a MIDI synth soundcard or a sampler.
But this (sampler) feature can be simulated by a PC with multitracking SW.
