I am going to add one of those sonic enhancers to the rack and wondered where to put it in the chain. After the preamp? After the EQ? Where?
Any recommendations on the various proprietary technologies to go for? (Aphex, BBE, Behringer)(They all seem to do it differently)
Thanks
Scott

The Aphex 204 is tunable - Out of the popular exciters, that's the only one I would suggest.

However, I'm not crazy about them in general, and I'd suggest putting your money into something more usable. Aural exciters are normally a "band-aid" for something that's missing somewhere else - On an analog system, they can be handy for adding that high-end sheen - The very same high-end sheen that gives digital its "harsh" moniker. They can be pretty handy on individual tracks that need a little extra push, but if you have control over those tracks from the start, I'd recommend just upgrading your front end and your skills with it. It's likely that you won't miss it.

Gee - I never answered your question - They're designed to go in-line (or as an insert) on whatever they're used on.

I heard a mix where an exciter was used on a vocal and (I don't know what exciter it was, i think it was a plug in) only the "excited" part, just some crisp high end, was sent to reverb. It gave a really nice bright reverb and sounded really good for the tune. Doesn't answer your question at all but I'm bored and thought I would share.

i'm selling my Aphex aural exciter,

its good for dj's that wanna boost their live sound, just put it after the main outputs, between the mixer and the amp

or well, i heard some people say it gives a good effect on a snaredrum,
but i was never pleased with the quality

maybe that 204 is a bit decent.. but i'm not buying it, i can get way better results if i put alot of time in working with some eq-ing and compression (well..most of the time that is;.à)

yeah after reading the vets comments about the bbe, ima slang my two units, and try to get a good hard ware reverb unit (lexicon).

can anyone point me in the right "model" direction as far as lexicon goes?
id like to have a good multi tasker lexicon, for guitars, drums, vox, all the good stuff. i know this has nata to do with the thread, but im a selfish bastard so......
thanx.

I have several effect units -- including the middle-class Lexi's (LXP15 mkII, MPX500s) -- and even though they sound pretty decent, I've got my eyes on the Kurzweil KSP8 at the moment...
