I'm new to the RTR world. I have a tascam 22-2. I've heard it works best with Maxell UD-35 or Ampex 407. My question is where to I buy this stuff (other than ebay), and how can I be assured that it will not "sticky sludge" or whatever, my machine.

While I'm at it, anyone have a mnual they want to send me?

Thanks.

You can get 407 from US Recording Media at www.usrecordingmedia.com Just navigate your way to their 1/4 open reel tape page. Or you can check at the Quantegy website, www.quantegy.com for another dealer. By the way, Ampex spun off its tape manufacturing division, in Alabama, which is now Quantegy. Which is why the tape at USR will be Quantegy 407, or Quantegy 456, etc. The Maxell stuff has been out of production for a while, as have virtually all tapes except the Ampex/Quantegy stuff. But that is about to change. The BASF/Agfa/Emtec tapes are back in production and should be available at dealers very soon, and ATR Magnetics is putting a +10dB mastering tape into production.

Yes, I just found the quantegy website. I found a dealer in my area who said that Quantegy recently filed a chapter 11, so they do not have much stock, and it's taking a long time to order some. He said he thought Quantegy was being revived, but he's not sure.

How accurate is this info????

They went chapter 11 about a year ago, but came back around summertime. I ran out of tape in September and it took a few days for my reseller to get some, but it is available. Zonal tape is being made (I'll have to check that out) and RMGI have been promising tape since last April ;-)

www.rmgi-usa.com - This is supposedly the old BASF/EMTEC formulations.

ATR are also making their own peculiar brand of tape, but it's very high output stuff and will require the deck to be calibrated for it.
