hi,

please listen to this and tell me where the low level distortion is coming from.

I have a feeling that its my cable(cheap radiowhack things) but I don't want to spend $100 on monster without educated opinions.

I doubt that its my vocal chain(even though it cost only $300). It was the v67 into the dmp2 into logic, using plugin effects.

Could it be the freaking plugins? I used Rverb, and ultramaximizer for the dither.

I know that it sound kinda OK, until I start comparing it to stuff done on paris, or Ammeth, or sjoko, or sonus, or lemonz or a host of others in the mixing clinic

COuld it be the converters??? I asked some of my friends, but they know nothing about recording and thought that it was something else.
thanks and peace

Keep in mind that I'm an idiot but I think I would try rolling off some of the high end. Was that EQ'd at all or just the reverb/compression? I doubt its the cable.

thats the second time someone is saying roll off the high end. I boosted the highs about 6 decibels which is a lot. I will flatten it and see if that helps at all.

peace and thanks

You can cut your boost to the top end down a little, but not to much.
You ight want to experiment with feeding in some extra low-mids, which will make it fuller.

Can I make another suggestion? I'd love to hear you stack more backing vocals on it. Now you have a lower in one channel - a higher in another - double them - (not mechanically - sing them again), at least 1 high and one low one, panned at 9 and 3 o'clock opposite their counterparts

Another thing - perhaps you are hearing a pretty good high end for the first time? Takes a bit of getting used to :)

?

What in the world was THAT? :)
I'd say the clarity and high end is pretty good, I don't see much wrong with it, aside from the fact that its in martian. I'd like to hear how it sat with other instruments hanging around.
Listening a 3rd time... It COULD use something, but the high end sheen seems fine if not even a tad LACKING, to me (I like a really present lead vocal)... sounds like something lower is thin. I might dump this in Sonar and poke around with it for fun, if you dont mind...
kind of an addictive little thing, isn't it?

You know... I think maybe that "grit" or "low level distortion" you refer to might just be some clarity that you have there. I can hear alot of throat, breath and other vocal sounds (that are often missing in posts that I hear on here) which might make you think you are hearing something you're not.
I don't hear distortion, what I hear is a pretty clean signal. Maybe I'm just not hearing what you are hearing though, maybe I'm missing something.
Maybe sjoko is right about what he said, you might need to get used to getting a decent sound. Kinda surprising when you actually do it. Scared myself a few times.
I wanna hear more.

Grit?

That sounds great! No, it's not perfect! But, it sounds great! Leave it alone!
Perhaps there is gritiness on your playback equipment!
But, on my computer, your recording sounds fine. ANd I want to hear more!

I agree with whats already been said..and that is ..it sounds
just fine...

I think what you will find is that once you build a mix around it
..it may not sound as gritty as you think..also im finding it best
not to boost the highs at the same freq or at the main buss
at all ..if i can do it in the mix its better..but no EQ at all is what
you are shooting for :)

Keep it up!

Also you never gave me any feedback on my mix in the clinic
What gives boss? :)

Hey Cy, I seem to remember something you posted a while ago, that you were trying to get something to "cut through" in your mix?
I think you've got the answer man!

Start stacking those vocals!!!!

thanks a lot everybody,

Well it seems that maybe its my voice that caused the problem and not the cable as I previously thought.

Anyhow, please listen here and comment

this time there is no eq on it so it should be a bit better.
I think there was a problem in Logic an that added to it. I have fixed that, so I hope that this is a bit better in your opinion.

THANKS.

ps, elbenj I will send you an email.
