I left a valuable vintage microphone with Tony Merrill of Stephen Paul
Audio about 4 years ago and was given a repair estimate. It is now 4 years later. They still have the mic and have never returned a call of mine.

To communicate with them I have to drive 100 miles, visit the shop and hope Tony's in which I have done several times and been told it wasn't ready yet but not to worry they would get on it soon. I went to their shop a couple of weeks ago and found they had moved. I've left several more messages asking where they are so I can pick up my mic and these calls have not been returned.

Does anyone know their new address or Tony's home phone?

Thanks, Don

Check with the county clerk's office, if they are using a fictitious business name, it has to be registered. If you learn they are incorporated, contact the state corporation commission, who will have the name and address of their registered agent, who is required to be available during business hours.

Contact Alan Hyatt (he's Tony's boss). He'll straighten things out.

Big Ray on this Forum appears to know him and how contact him, at least as of his October 2005 post
I talk to Tony often. He's cool as ever.

818-905-9952 Tony is good people, maybe wasnt up to date with what Stephen was doing. He will make it right. Great guy.

Hi Ray,

The number you posted is the number I've been leaving messages on for 4 years. I left the mike with Tony, not Stephen so he knows about it.

I hear he does great work but part of doing great work is staying in touch, getting to it in a reasonable amount of time and warning someone ahead of time if it will be a long wait.

Nothing is more irritating than not getting calls or emails returned - all it does is stress people out unnecessarily. If someone is too busy to return calls they should either start turning down new business or hire an assistant.

I'm busy as hell but I return most calls within 30 seconds of getting them off my machine, even if there's no possible benefit to me in talking to the person. I return it just so the other person has closure and doesn't feel ignored. There's enough stress in the world - why add to it?

I've gotten more feedback on this bulletin board in 1 day than I have on my mic in 4 years and I really appreciate it. Thanks to everyone who replied and I'll try to follow up on the other leads. I will also repost when the situation's resolved.

Thanks again,

Don

I'm astonished that you would have left anything for four years, but I hope you get some joy from speaking to the parent company and I'm sure if it is all as you say then it will be sorted out in no time.

So, waiting 15 years or so for Tony or Stephen to get around to fixing my Altec M-21 is probably a little unreasonable?

15 years without getting in touch to see how it's going might be :D

Update - Just checked my email and found a nice note from Tony saying he would get the mic out and finish it off - so hopefully I'll have it back soon. I guess I'll have to fix the rest of my mics myself unless I can find a faster route for repair.

I have a degree in electronics and just fixed a C24 so I can probably handle many things that don't involve re-diaphragming, re-ribboning or special mods. I'm sure a lot of mic repair can be done by replacing a bad capsule, tube, transistor, nuvistor, transformer, cap or resistor or rewetting a cold solder joint or cleaning contacts.
