I am looking for a two track reel to reel mastering deck similar to the Tascam BR-20 or the OTARI MX5050BIII but I am finding that none of the regular online type stores are carrying them. I found the TASCAM at 8thstreet.com for like $2,800. But the OTARI, as well as all of OTARI's products... cannot be found in these on-line stores. Where do studios buy them? Mx local music shop sure as shit doesn't stock an OTARI Elite+ Digitally controlled Analog mixing console. Or a Solid State Logic desk. Where do you get them?
Also with regards to mastering projects... where do I buy things like sound meters? If I am trying to check that the levels of all my songs are even with each other, I don't trust my ears nearly as much as a little device that hasa needle on it that tell me how loud my stuff is. Even after listening to a whole CD's worth of music that I bought fromthe store, my ears are too gone to tell if the last song is the same loudness as the first. And frequencys are also a problem. I want to have as flat as possible frequencies across an entire project. Not that track one has booming bass while track three has no bass, and a high paper sounding over-boosted highs.
I know that mastering is an art that shouldn't be taken lightly. And in all reality, any project that I undertake that has a "serious" purpose, i.e mass reproduction for release, I would outsource the mastering and let someone that has done it a lot do it professionally for me. But that doesn't mean that I should just give up on trying it sometimes here and there.
Where can you buy "sound level detectors" and "standing room frequency response detectors"... and do such things exist?
Where can I learn more about mastering? Books? (Don't laugh, I know you can not learn all there is to know about mastering from a book). But I'd rather ride to work on the train reading about mastering than reading some shitty magazine about home improvements or whatever... so any book suggestions would be appreciated. Any advice or tips on where to buy mastering gear and to learn how to use it would also be appreciated.
Thanks guys,
Mike
