Basically do you plug everything into your soundcard, like a keyboard and digital reverb hardware etc...would they each go into one of the say 4ins on a sound card..?
I'm not sure someone clarify this for me,
Overall what would I need to plug in a pair of moniters, a keyboard and an effects processor, where do they go and what type of connection do I need? thanks in advance, Peas...

What's up PRiZ.

There is a myriad of ways to connect your equipment.

It depends on what you have and/or what you are planning to buy.

It also depends on what is the best configuration for you and the way you produce. :)

Now, I will not try to confuse you (I read your first post on this BBS).

Let's take the first thing you mentioned...Connecting a keyboard.

You could, for starters, go out of your analogue 1/4" outputs into your sound card, or you could go out of your MIDI outputs into your soundcards MIDI inputs, or you could out of your computer's MIDI OUT then THRU your keyboard into another device, or you could go out of the LIGHT PIPE device on your keyboard into your sound card etc...

The people here on this site will help you to make the correct decision.

You might want to tell us exactly what kind of music you will be making.
You should also share with us how much money you are willing to spend on equipment.

I have my equipment setup like this (keep in mind that I have 3 soundcards)...

Amp>Monitors

Board>Amp

Keyboard >Board

MPC>Board

Turntables/Mixer>Board

Board>Computer

That is the"simplest" way for to connect my equipment.

My board gives me 8 analogue INS/10 digital INS, 10 digital OUTS, and 2 MIDI INS/OUTS.

Sound card #1 gives me 8 TDIF (digital) INS/OUTS, 2 SPDIF (digital), and 2 MIDI INS/OUTS.

Sound card #2 gives me 4 analogue INS/OUTS and one SPDIF (digital).

Sound card #3 gives me 1 stereo IN/OUT.

I also have 2 additonal MIDI IN/OUT, by using a Midisport 2X2.

I hope that helps a bit...

thanks...

okay! here's the scoop, I'm going to be prodcucing hiphop and doing my own vocals. I've already got a new computer athlon 800 or somthing, 256MB and all that. It's waiting for me at the store, so in general it shouldn't be hard for me to run anything...
I was going to get the c-port yadda yadda, but I started having doughts about it's sound quality, but mainly becasue of the 8 I/O's and thought I was paying more for what I didn't need. I'm currently lookin for a soundcard that's at a proffesional level of sound, has a MIC input (2 preferably), and some I/O's for my Korg digital reverb (effects processor I got a while ago off a friend, but to this day have never used it) I'm also considering getting a keyboard so I can get hands on with the sound, I'm also planning on getting Reason which needs an ASIO driver and I'll wait and see how it's software keyboard is before I buy one, and also I need a decent out board compressor or a digital compression algorithm of choice. (I have no idea what an algorithm is...?) The compression is due to Reason's not so great one, in replace. and then monitors which I have sorta got an idea about brands and quality of what I need etc...These are all things I'm pretty sure I'll have in the end or be getting so I should be prepared to be able to do this when ready.

So here's a rundown.
Soundcard...

- proffesional quality sound
- MIC input with preamps and phantom power (atleast 2 preferably)
- equivalent to a mixer (so I don't need to buy one etc)
- enough I/O for an external keyboard and a digital reverb...oh wait, mayby turntbles too, can't forget that option.
- equivalent to a good compressor (or can I just get a software program?)
- asio driver (for Reason)

That's the jist of what I want in a soundcard, and what I'm looking for, but don't let me forget to say that I'm willing to spend up to around 900 canadian depending on what card and how good a deal, but I'm almost sure what wont really won't be that high.
I've been searching and reading reviews for a soundcard for the last month and still havn't come to one, help would be appreciated... It seems almost no cards have a MIC input, or good MIC abilities like phantom power. (suggestions, reccomendations needed...?)

As for monitors and what keyboard, what MIC, I'll worry about that later, right now I just want a souncard...
Sorry for babblein, thanks fo readin, peas!

You could look into the Tascam TMD-1000 board.

You could also look into the Tascam 822PCI sound card.

Check it out @ http://www.tascam.com

It should be able to cover the parameters of what you need and it should be able to stay under budget.

However, I do not know the exchange rate of Canadian to US dollars.

Peace... :)

thanks...

I'll look into it...I've just realized after stumbbleing onto some super good information about microphones and soundcards, it's a whole other world. There's whole list of things to consider, so now I have to make sure I find the exact microphone that I'll use with my souncard and make sure it's going to work...
here's the site if your interested, it's worth a look...

It's late right now and I'm to tired to write, I'll reply with a further update later...thanks again.

oh yeah...

The exchange rate is about 50 percent higher here, so something 1000 in the US is about 1500 in canada.

hmmmm...

The TMD-1000 board, way to much...
822 PCI soundcard seemed kinda sketchy, Don't think it had any microphone inputs...That whole site seemed kinda odd and unproffesional looking. I'm pretty sure there's much better for me out there, but good effort, I'll deffinitely need a good review to make me really consider it...I checked there message board, well, I'll pass... I'm gonna start narrowing the few cards I've seen that looked alright, all the other cards I havn't heard about I'm sure it's for a reason...I'll update when I have a better idea.

Ok, I hope that you locate the proper equipment. :)

peace...

p.s. The mic inputs are on the board not the sound card ;) . And, the board only costs $500, that's 750 Canadian dollars.

Again, peace...
