I usually mix during recording (between the takes), and was wondering if that's the right thing to do.

I would very much like to know the pros and cons of mixing during recording and mixing after recording?

Any opinions?

No matter what, I don't like to mix the same day I record. Fresh ears a few days later serves me better. Especially if I'm doing multiple songs for a single project. That way they have a little more in common with each other.

I like to mix on the fly. I can get a better idea of how the tracks are coming together and what I need out of any additional tracks. It can also point out any problems with earlier tracks that may need to be recorded.

If you are doing your own stuff at home there really isnt any rule. When other people are paying you it is more practical and efficient to record everthing than mix.

Mix Mix MIX!

My first mix is almost never the final mix.

I'll burn a CD of the mixdown, and then "Live with it" for a while.
I drive around in the car and playback the CD at extreme volumes and then low as background music while commuting.

After a while little things show up: (Lead Guitar solo too loud)

(Background harmony vocal is too soft)

(Drums could come up a bit)

And so on.

Mix Mix MIX!
