Here is another sample of the same artist that produced the tune that baffled my mp3 encoder the other day. This time no problems.
Go figure.
Timothy Owen wrote the tune.

Lovin' Spoonful morfs into Blind Melon...nicely recorded, did you have anything to do with that or only the encoding process?.....and would I be wrong in assuming a really nice microphone was used on that vocal?....gibs

Don't forget Jon Anderson and early McCartney/Wings.
I just took it from his CD and encoded with Vegas. And yes, a pair of Neumanns were involved. Many more soon to be at an mp3.com site near you.

There's an interesting article in August's HomeRecording magazine, which talks about garageband.com (a very interesting deal) and ways to get your music on their site in a format that will sound good. A producer called Jim Weeks recommends keeping your tracks as simple as possible for the Real Audio: "The problem is if you start doing things like trying to boost the high end through a filtered system where they do data compression, it might give you weird overtones, all sorts of ring modulation, false harmonics, and unwanted noises..."

Now, I realize you're talking about mp3 and not Real Audio, but maybe there's a connection - unusual processing in the original yields problems in the compressed data.
