When saving a file, should the enable dithering box ALWAYS be checked???

I am using Cool Edit 2000, not pro, hopefully someone can still help me out.
I want to save my files as Type 1-24 bit, so I can give it to someone else to master. But this enable dithering box (under Save as > Options) has me stumped. By default, it is always checked. If dithering is supposed to be saved till last, then I don't want to do it inadvertantly! As a test, I've tried saving it both ways and listened to both, but I heard no difference. STILL.............who knows what kind of errors or sonic abnormalities are going on!
thanks for the help

If you are maintaining 24 bit till the end, then there is no use for a dither. You can leave it unchecked. When you step down to 20bit or 16bit dither is applied. You wont get any errors and probably you wont hear it because of its very low amplitude. since it is just a noise, introducing dither wont harm your existing wave.

Ok, but I started at 32bit float. Or is that considered equivalent to 24 bit?

Yup. Start in 32-bit floating point and stay there throughout the whole project. Don't dither anything until that final dither when you dumb it all down to 44.1/16-bit.
