Metal dude
My preamp has a low cut, and i use it on everything i record. But my condenser has a low cut switch also and i never use it, maybee i should use it when tracking kick drums? The music i do has constant dbl kicks and low tuned guitars( this is why i use the low cut on the pre to try to clean up the low end mess)When/what instrument do use the low cut on?

I use mine when doing close vocal work and on guitar cabs.

Low cuts are very useful when you're close mic'ing a extremely loud guitar cabinet with a large condenser microphone. This also minimizes the bass proximity effect and adds some sparkle to the sound. Meshuggah is definitely correct on his commentary!:D

thanks guys

should i be using both low cuts, preamp & mic? I think i need a little sparkle.

Hi detuned6,

I found a cool trick to add some "sparkle" to heavy guitars recently--try a small diaphragm capsule condenser [such as an AKG C-391B or MC012 for example] set up in omni really close up to the speaker? That should sound real nice there & then add a dynamic mic in the mix to taste. See what it sounds like leaving the low-cut control off on your preamp? Experiment around--that's the KEY! :)

I'll generally only use the bass cut on my condenser when micing an acoustic guitar (sits better in the mix) or if I've got a vocalist with a deep voice who insists on "hugging" the mic.

But as everyone says, experiment and see what works.

Mark
