I want to know everyone's pick for the best guitar pre-amp and what FX units you like to use with it.

My pick for guitar pre-amp would be the Tech21/Sansamp PSA1 rack unit. The biggest mistake I ever made was selling it because the sound is just amazing. I used it with a Lexicon MPX1 FX rack unit. I desired to have easier foot control (having to kicking your rack in the middle of a song isn't good), so I sold the two units and bought the VOX Tonelab SE (floor). Great unit with awesome tone, but had to buy a Sansamp GT2 pedal for distortion/drive. Still not the same as the PSA, though. If I had to do it over, I'd keep the Sansamp. sell the Lexicon and try the new TC Electronics multi-fx pedal board that just came out.

What's your favorite guitar preamp and FX combination?

I only own the PSA-1, and can say that it does have an awesome sound...even for bass.

However, I haven't owned anything but that...so I can't comment on the other pre-amps. :( or maybe it's really :)

Intersound IVP. The Greatful Dead to Steve Albini. Thats a pretty wide range of applications I would say. Versatile, unique, sturdy, and relatively cheap.

Session Award JD10. Needs some mods in the switch dept and circuit. to make it usable on stage, but even without that, a great sounding overdrive for DI recording.

My recording chain is also the SansAmp PSA-1 with a Lexi fx unit, only I have the MPX550. The SansAmp is definitely a nice unit. I actually bought it for use with my basses. (The Chris Squire patch sold me on it.) I didn't even own an electric guitar for several years after I bought it. Just recently picked one up, though, and have been playing around with the guitar amp patches. The PSA-1 ROCKS, man! I noticed that it does high gain sounds the best. The Marshall patches are incredible, and the Mesa Boogies are pretty sweet. The various stomp boxes models are cool, and the heavily overdriven AC30 patch (Queen) is a blast, too.

If you have the funds, the Triaxis is just plain awesome... If you don't have enough money for that pre, the ADA MP-1 and the Marshall JMP-1 both rock hard...

If you want some clips of the JMP, check out the HC boards for a guy with the user name "Billy Corgan" (hah), he has some awesome clips...

Marshall JMP cannot be beaten

True true man,

The great JMP is so good, just like the Superlead and almost any other Marshall

...........heh hang on, this thread was about PRE amps, not about amps, so let me open up another post to give you some insight in what I like :D

Sansamp Bassdriver.............

Bassdriver for when you play guitar???

Sure you must be nuts!!

Well yes kind of but................you will be surprised that the SAnsbassdriver works well for guitar too, and you know what it does..........?? It is able to give you a nice valve sound in a compact box.

Okay they are not Cheap, but still you may like it.

I tend to use them for recording with small amps, when I say small I mean really really small, think of things like the Marhall Microstack.

So the Sansbass will add a valve sound to your little amp, and before the Sansbass you could add a TS9, all in all you will be able to get a versatile overdriven sound. If you are looking for mega distortiontones you may want to try another distortion pedal, but still the Sansbass would warm up your overall sound.

To some people this "Warming Up" may sound like "Mudding Up" but that is just a personal taste.
