Please excuse the title, I'm at work...

I've been recording for two years now with this setup
Behringer 12chan p.o.s.--> M-Audio Duo--> laptop with Cool edit

I am in need of a better setup. I definitely need a new mixer (12 xlr's atleast), but beyond that I'm unsure what the best way is to go for digital recording/mixing. I am curious how everyone has theirs set up so I can get a better idea of what I should be looking for. What do you think?

(Recommend 12-16chan mixer?)-->(Recommend soundcard/hd recorder?)

I will be editing with my computer so as long as I can get it there in the end I'm satisfied. Is it possible to keep channels on different tracks though?
My budget is 2 grand. Thanks!

Dell Dimension 8300 tower
PIV 3.2G processor
1GB RAM
(2) Echo Layla 24/96 interfaces (16 ins and outs)
Sony Vegas 5
Sony Acid Pro 4
Sony Sound Forge 6
Sony CD Architect 5
Sony DVD Architect 2
Most signals into the Laylas are routed from my Mackie 1604 mixer. Some signals go directly from mic pres into the Laylas.

BLUE Dragonfly > Focusrite VoiceMaster Pro Channel Strip > Aardvark LX6 (4in/4out) > Dell P4 - 3.0ghz, 512ram, 2 80gig hd's > Event TR8 Active Monitors. > Cubase SX 2.0..

And that's about all she wrote. Oh and we can't forget my cheasy little Samson mixer which I use as my headphone pre.. lol.

As long as your card, breakout box or rack mounted unit has multiple inputs you shouldnt have a problem recording multiple tracks. You really don't even need a mixer unless you want to mix outside the box. With my four IN's I really don't need much else. I guess it all depends what you're recording and how many simultaneous inputs you need.

Currently running an Aardvark Q10 into AMD 64 machine.

In the very near future, I'll have a Midas Venice running into a RME Fireface.

No matter how much I encourage him, my dog just doesn't seem interested in home recording...

I use a couple DAW's: MOTU Digital Performer with MOTU hardware, and DigiDesign 002R with ProTools.

Digital Performer is my first choice for my own projects because it has great midi features. I like ProTools too though, and need it for compatibility with other studios.

Oh, I misunderstood. Here's my setup.

Snatch that up, dude. The best one-track DAW ever made. You won't be disappointed.

It also comes with the "Sing-it-Yourself" Barbie.
