What's wrong with my tape machine?

I have a Teac A-1200 2-track 1/4" that has somehow gone awry. The tape just won't play right, if I push play, it won't move, it gets stuck. It will only 'play' if I have fast-forward or rewind engaged.

Is it my tape (it's not new or well-cared for by any means)? Could this be the infamous sticky-shed?

are the lifters free to move? sometimes if they get stuck the machien won't play.
 
Hey there,
It's probably the capstan belt that has gone. Does it only play for a little while, but gets slower and slower, from fast forward?

If it is the capstan belt, it's a pretty easy fix, and you can order a brand new one from Tascam.
