I'm lucky enough to have inherited sumbody else's computer. It's a good enough machine - 333 Mhz, but I'm having trouble with getting it to do what I want:
Running Cakewalk I couldn't get it to record anything off a mic or play anything back. The inbuilt recorder (accesories) also didn't work, nor does the CD player. All other Window blips, program music (inluding clips on Morpheus and Real Player) etc sound without any problem.
It turns out that when I have the CD-ROM of a program which involves voice recognition (Learn French) in the CD bay then the inbuilt recorder suddenly records and plays back without any trouble! Cakewalk on the other hand only records but nothing is to be heard when playing back.
Now there's a mystery for you...
The said souncard appears as 'Sound System (534)' in the Multi Media register. There's another one 'SB 16 (220)', but it's the same however I set the configuration.
What could be the problem here? Let me know what you think.

Go to the Windows audio mixer....

Start>Programs>Accesories>Entertainment>Volume Control

Select Option>Properties then select Recording

This will bring up a series of controls. Check the "Select" box for the port you wish to record from (line-in, mic, etc.)

Then go to your recording program and try recording.
