I'v been playing guitar for about years now and have little experience recording but i'm really interested in home recording specifically with my computer. I'm looking at programs like cakewalk and other programs but i'm not sure what i need to buy. What i want to do is record a four piece band (live) then i have ideas about mixing and edditing on my computer. I have questions like how much hard disk space do I need and so on. Maybe someone could give me an idea on what kind of software i would need and also computer and hardware requirments concidering ther type of recording i want to do.... Thx

If your intrested of the hardware you should check the Computer Recording and Souncards forum...

about the software...yep Cakewalk is quite simple to use and to understand.

But surf around this site and get answers. It took me about a month to figure out what I should buy and what I want.

I have a Duron based computer and Echo Mia soundcard, Behringer ultragain pro preamp and cakewalk, kind of setup

but... that's only one way to go. One thing you should decide is that do you want to do the actual recording with your computer or just editing?

Welcome to the Forum. I'm a "record all on my own" type of guy, so I have quite a minimal set up, but Cakewalk is definately the business.

And this is the place to be, any questions you have, problems to solve etc etc, there will definately be someone here who can help you out, this is a superb little peice of cyberspace, and I've learnt a shedload since joining.

Enjoy your stay,

Dave.

Welcome Hythloth (intriguing name).

One important thing when recording a live band to your computer is to have a soundcard (or two) with enough inputs to be able to record as many tracks as you can simultaneously. A good mixer will be in order.

As far as hard drive space, it is common (when the budget allows it) to have a second hard drive on your computer with 7200 rpm speed dedicated to audio files only. Around 40 Gb would most probably be sufficient.

The choice of software is very subjective. Most of them have a quite steep learning curve and they end up doing about the same things. A very good value for the price is N-Track. Check out this thread for lots of opinions.

The "Search" function should give you to read for ages.

Good luck!

Thx alot guys, this gives me a better idea of what i need. I figure i'll need to upgrade my system pretty soon because my sound card is crap and I only have 20gbs of hard drive space. I want to dedicate my computer to recording because i figure this is the way of the future as far as sound gose. Here is what i plan on buying when i get the money: Pentium 4 processor, 256mb ram, 40gig hard drive, some kind of mixer, and i'm not sure about the sound card yet, and of course edditing software. I believe this should get me started recording a few live tunes with my band. The sound card i'm not sure about yet. Any ideas would be cool, just let me know what the best is and then what's afforable :)
