What's this new Project 5? Or should I get Sonar 2.2?

Well, as some of you know from a previous post, I've been messing around with a trial version of Sonar...seems way easier to use than Steinberg stuff. Anyway, I'm now seriously contemplating a purchase - but I was just on Cakewalk's web site, and saw that Project 5 is comming...anyone know about that, or will I be just fine with Sonar? I'll be using a Delta 1010 when it gets here, and a dual Athlon machine.

Thanks for any suggestions,
Jed

The answer is 'depends'....

What do you want to do with the software? Sonar is a seqeuncer / audio workstation and its strengths are audio, sequencing and control. It doesn't have any of its own souind sources itself, although it comes boxed with a few DXi soft synths.

Project 5 is more the reverse - it majors on the soft synth area but has less sequencing and no (I think) audio.

I guess Cakewalk would like us all to have one of each!!

Shuggy - I think Sonar is probably what I want, then. My first project is going to be making a CD of some hymns -- mostly I just play the Piano, so that will be midi off my studiologic controller. But, my friend plays the guitar, and we'd like to put some of that in there, as well as a violin. So I guess I need a combo of Audio and Midi sequencing.

Sonar 2.2 still is what I need, right?
Also, I was wondering is WAVELAB the best editor to use with Sonar? If it is, I have it, because it came with my (soon to be out of my computer :)) Audigy 2. If it's not, what others should I try?

Thanks again, I'm new to this software, but I think it's pretty good for what I want.

Project 5 is like Fruity Loops on steriods and probably very similar to Reason. The type of music this would be used to create is probably very different that what people would use Sonar for.

Ok...kind of like "out of my league" music, right? :) I just want to do some pretty simple songs with like 4 instruments or so, some MIDI, and some audio recordings mixed. So I'll get Sonar then.

Do you use Wavelab to dither back to 16/44.1, or does sonar do this built in?

Thanks again for the help,
Jed

Sonar does this, but Wavelab does it better... ;)

Thanks guys! I'm in the middle of reading that liked post (long :)), and I think Sonar is what I want...but I'll keep the Wavelab I've got installed, just in case I'd rather use it. I mean, if it does it better than Sonar, and it came with my sound card, why not, right? Is it easier to use for dithering or does it just do better quality?

Thanks again for the input.

Dithering is not something that is "hard to do", we're talking quality! :)

Wavelab is a superb program for finishing and polishing your work. It works well with Sonar.;) Have fun!
