Whats the word around here on brass and ceramic "speaker cones" vs. Auralex mopads?

Just wondering. The ceramics can go as high as $100 for 3 of them, but thanks to Beezo (got the package today by the way thanks) I was led to this link http://www.oregondv.com/spikes.htm

where you can get 6 of the small brass ones for under $20.

Big discussion over at slutz about this.

Whats the word here, what are your experiences?

 http://www.oregondv.com/Nordost_CBID-1_Cable_Burner.htm

Only in Oregon...

Hey Ethan....someone beat me to it. Hahahahahaha! I don't fucking believe it. Even the ad says there is no test results available to confirm it does ANYTHING. The chip is highly secret, which cost them a lot of money to develop too. Hahahaha! Now I've seen everything. They even have cable "stands". Ok, that confirms it. Time to market my "Air conditioner" spray. Guaranteed to "balance" the ions, which stablizes standing waves. As a byproduct, it neutralizes any "negative" grounds floating around too. Of course, its a secret formula, and no tests have been published for security reasons. But your ears will confirm the difference. Don't use close to animals though, as its been reported that they become insatiable and start chewing on "everything", especially cables which have been "burned in". Oh, that reminds me.
I'll have to dig out my small room diffusion matrix prototype too. Bet it'll sell like hotcakes. "Lack" of truth in advertizing is such a great marketing tool......damn, I completely forgot about those "time shares" on Mars....

Hey Tubedude, I don't know about the cones, but I do have a bridge for sale and soon I'll have the spray available:p Of course, I'm a pessimistic heritic:p What was that Barnum said..?
Oh yea.;)

Dude,

Rick's got the right attitude. :D

Seriously, there is some merit to the notion of decoupling loudspeakers from whatever they're resting on. The standard material for this is 2-inch 705 rigid fiberglass, which costs all of a dollar or two. And it works even better than cones. This is from my recent article in the February issue of EQ magazine:

Decouple your speakers: Sound travels through solid materials faster than through air. So when loudspeakers are sitting on a desk, low frequencies can transmit from the speaker’s enclosure through the desk and floor and arrive at your ears before the waves in the air. If the secondary path is strong enough, the phase shift caused by this time delay contributes to low frequency response errors. One solution is to buy speaker isolation pads sold for just this purpose. You can optionally make pads from rigid fiberglass or even kitchen sponges - the kind that become stiff when dry work best for this.

I wouldn't go nuts with this either. But the little dome shaped rubber things would probably work ok?????

Ethan, the decoupling thing under speakers...got no problem with that, however, it would appear that ANYTHING solid, even these "cones" would pass vibration right into what ever they are sitting on. Thats why I have mine sitting on a "floating" isolator. Its 2 pieces of hardwood seperated by 4 small vibration mounts like you would find in electronics stores. Works great. On top of them is a mouse pad. then the speakers. Can't feel anything on the console bridge.
But I'm no expert so maybe the cones do SOMETHING, like.....look "hi tech". What are they supposed to do? I didn't even read it. Ok, I'll do that. Maybe I'll learn something new. Like what NOT to waste money on? Ha! But, to each his own. The 703 thing sounds like a good idea. I'll read your article.

Oh, I forgot...how does structural transmission meet my ears?:D Through my feet? I thought the brain can't diffrentiate sounds less than....hmmm..what is it...20 or so ms apart? How does that apply? Seems like it would be about 3 ms from my monitors to my ears, and the structural transmission would arrive at....oh about .5 or so:p out of phase or not....I don't think my brain could tell the difference. But I'm almost ...oops,nevermind ;) ....my brain is slow anyway! Ha!:p

Rick,

> it would appear that ANYTHING solid, even these "cones" would pass vibration right into what ever they are sitting on. <

Yes, but the surface areas in contact with each other are smaller, so less vibration passes through. But I agree with you that the best isolation is material that turly decouples the two surfaces. As opposed to those silly cones.

> how does structural transmission meet my ears? <

Just as you'd expect. If the speaker vibrates the table it's on, and that in turn vibrates the floor, then the whole floor vibrates. So vibrations from the part of the floor that's near you gets to your ears sooner than the sound from the speaker itself.

If anyone needs their cables burned in, I offer a more complete solution than simply passing high power full-spectrum signals through your cables.

For $99.95 plus tax, significantly less costly than the unit above, I will have a specially trained engineer test your cable for 24 hours, both electronically and thermally.

Mastercard, Visa, Amex, postal or bank check, and of course, paypal. Shipping not included.

All burn-in procedures fully documented.

And for only $200 more, plus S & H, I will inspect the insulation for deleterious effects related to the burn-in procedure, and recommend first-rate litigation experts to recover lost studio time... :=)

Oh, that price is per two-conductor cable, up to 25 feet - write for info on longer cables or snakes...

:D :D :D :) God do I feel better now. I was beginning to doubt my confidence in common sense. It may do nothing for acoustics, but its the only thing that keeps me somewhat sane in this techno-gizmo world. Thanks guys.

Hey frederic, how ya doin guy? Hows the studio going?

I think the studio is still there, unless its been overrun with field mice that like to eat fiberglass and sheetrock :D

In all seriousness, I've been extremely busy between work, car projects, house remodeling projects, so sadly I'm still in the spackling stage. I swadge a little mud here and there once in a while in the evenings, but you know how that goes... SLOW!

Though, I did do something kinda cool, or psychotic, depending on your viewpoint. I bought and installed a commercial-grade air compressor in the garage, and ran plumbing around the side wall so I can plug in tools pretty much anywhere along the wall so I don't get tangled in long hoses draped everywhere. While plumbing, I had the bright idea of running one section of pipe up through the footer in the shared wall between my studio and the weird prison bathroom, so behind the access door to the shower valves (which face the interior of the studio) there is now an air tap with a valve.

So I can use my air sander, air drill, air screwgun etc in the studio as well.

I haven't figured out why I did this since there are more than enough outlets around for the minimal power tool usage I'll need in the studio going forward, but now I have compressed air too.

What is VERY cool is when the compressor is running, I can barely hear it in the studio, which is right above the garage. Standing next to the compressor while its running, my ears ring so the sound dampening between the studio and the compressor is pretty good.

On what, demented musicians or for sound effects? :D

Hahahahahaha! Of course you would do that frederic. Makes perfect sense to me. Hey, I thought about that myself actually as my shop is right below my studio too, never mentioned it though. I thought it would only PROVE I'm ...let's just say, unaligned.:p

I am not sure why I ran the air up here, but the air sander is much easier to grasp than the two electric ones I have, so maybe there is a reason for the madness none the less.

BTW, this is what I've been doing on and off while "working from home". Yeah, I know its not a studio project.

Doesn't everyone need digital gauges in their work truck?

heh-heh

And here is what its going to look like all lit up:

And sorry to have ruined your thread, again, Tubedude.
