The A stands for "active", which has a built-in amplifier for each speaker. P stands for "passive", where you use your own amplifier.

These are active speakers they resemble the earlier 2030's but they don't have the "A" after the 2031A. Meh $350AUS I can't complain

I believe that if he had plain 2031 thats before thay released a passive pair and thus the relation between p for passive and a for active as thay now stand currently so if he has an active pair that has a model of truth 2031 without the a then they were introduced without the magnetic shielding as far as I can remember if I'm wrong sorry for the misunderstanding

I tend to think anything using less than a 6" woofer isn't going to accurately represent the lows, and needs some help from a sub. Some would put that at 8", and I do run a sub with my KRKs with 6" woofers. This is one of those things where a response curve just doesn't tell the whole story. Reproducing certain frequencies, and accurately representing them are two different things, and small cones just can't move enough air to do the job. This matters a whole lot less for acoustic folk music than for dance/hiphop, etc. For this kind of music, it's gotta bump.
