I turn on MTV or radio and stuff just sounds like CRAP...total amatuer CRAP...I mean everything's in tune, not a single note out of place, but still CRAP

What album have you heard lately where you want to go get the CD instead of hearing the mp3 ?

It's not recent by any means...

...but a few weeks ago I picked up XTC's Black Sea -- and haven't stopped listening to it since... recording and production is top notch....!

...and I gave up listening to the radio years ago.......

I listen to the XTC's Greatest Hits when ever I need to get my ears "tuned"..But at work in the car{radio}...Man its really sad!I can tell you this though.. The Cookie Monster's got a metal band and it seems like they play alot of his stuff. He must be sellin' a sh*t load of records:D.. Radio will rot my brain!

Uninvisible by Medeski, Martin< & Wood

I really like this album.

Beck's Sea Change is good too. I don't really know if I like it, but its good.

I really like the sound of Jack Johnson's album too...I forget the name of it off the top of my head.

Ben Folds is crankin' out some really good stuff. Fiona Apple . . . Radio Head . . . I've heard Peter Gabriel just put out a must-hear, although I'll reserve judgement untill I give it a good spin.

Oh Brother Where art thou for it's basic mic in room style, and Deftones White Pony for it's guitars, and drums.

Shit, I thought I was gonna be original.

I stil hafta say it: XTC's apple venus is the most pristene, dynamic, all around great recording my ears have experienced.

If you haven't heard it I HIGHLY recommend a listen, try not to get overwhelmed by the cheesy english attitude and hear the production.

Today I picked up Megadeth's So Far So Good So What and it totally blew my mind.............yeah right....I sold that cd years ago because the music and the production are total crap:D. Countdown to Extinction and Youthanasia are surely their best sounding recordings to date and could compete against any other great sounding metal album of the period.

Be not Nobody is a decent one suprisingly put out by a youngster.

Im also digging the Shannon McNally "Jukebox Sparrows"

Two against Nature is on my all time top ten list, Is also a fairly recent release from 2000.

The last high quality production I heard on the radio was APC's "Judith". That was what.. a couple years ago? I stopped listening to the radio a few months after that. Tool's Lateralus is good too, but not as good as their previous work.

I was really impressed with Cake's Comfort Eagle (interviewed the trumpet player about a month ago) and Ben Folds' Rockin' the Suburbs. Originality and retro-ness obviously go a long way with me.

*puts on the flame retardant suit* :)

are you guys treble deaf ?

something is WRONG with me...your sposed to get more treble deaf as the years go on, but I find most of the above cd's to be distorted, squashed and treble boosted beyond comprehension,

maybe Im going Bass deaf!!!!!!

its a DAMN good thing I dont master albums, none of my clients would sell a single one, cuz they would sound too quiet

Pipe, you are right, some of that stuff has been squashed with no mercy six days till sunday, like the APC record, I bet the meters do not move a bit if you listen through a system with meters.

I agree with pipeline, I'd like to hear less compression on todays CDs but it seems like everyone is out to beat the next person (hot level wise) How do we stop it?

Well, these aren't so new now, but to hear some really great recording, producing, and mastering, try Seal's 2nd CD (I think 2nd, the one with "Kiss from a rose", produced by Trevor Horn, amazing stuff), or KD Lange's "Ingenue"<SP?>(sonic brilliance). And yes, anything by Steely Dan is an audiophile's delight.

What about Toy Matinee, that cd is a super slick production, the instruments are played in a superb flawless fasion, the mixing and production are seamless as well, a must any serious audiophile.....

Wilco - YHF (strange recording, but I like it)

guided by voices - Universal Truths and Cycles

I picked up Robert Plant's latest CD and it's got an interesting sound. I can't quite decide if I like the engineering or not yet. The band and songs kick ass but the album is very mono/lo fi sounding.
