whats the difference between a sidechain VS envelope follower?

How can i use my KEY input or Side chain input (they mean the same thing right) to "modulate" the input signal levels or act like a envelope follower please?
 
the "side chain" is the chain that hold the "center chains" together on semi-trucks, so they dont get stuck in the snow in winter time.

The envelope follower is similar to a mail man, only follows the envelope instead of delivering it.
