I need a backup bass to teach lessons with.

It doesn't even have to work - although if it did - that would be a bonus.
I already have a nice bass that I use - so this is really honestly just a bottom of the barrel, filler piece to show technique with.

My basic requirements are that it can actually be tuned and that the neck doesn't pop off.

Extra's would include a working pickup and halfway decent intonation.

Much like the microphone I bought for rap vocals.....I need this to be under $100. Under $10 would be even better - but I wont push my luck.

...and yes - I posted a WTB in the gear ad section. I'm not asking you to sell me stuff here though. I'm seeking advice. So it's a little different. :D

I found at least a half-dozen for $100 or less on just the 1st page of results at craigslist.org in the Los Angeles area.

I bought a brand-new Ibanez SRX300 at GC for something like $150 last year. It's impressive for the price.

SX by Rondo. Best bang for the buck in the entry-level guitar/bass market IMO.

Heh, I don't know. My friend got one of the $50 guitars they're selling, and he seems to think it's halfway decent. But, yeah, I'd imagine that while it's playable, it's certainly not a high-quality instrument.
