What's the best way to get audio from a mixer to a computer?

I have a Mackie 1402 board with nice preamps and 4 outs. So how would you suggest I get those 4 channels into my Macbook Pro without repurchasing preamps in a typical firewire/usb interface? Ie, do you all have suggestions for digital audio converters?

Ie, I have been having trouble finding digital audio converters that are simply audio converters and not full featured interfaces. An 8 channel Apagee Rosetta is the only one I've found and it's $2500.

Thoughts on the best way to get a traditional mixer's signals into a computer?

And maybe I'm niave - but with all the analog mixers out there w/ their own preamps and phantom power etc of every size and cost -- and all the computers running digital audio recording software... why aren't there more options for digital audio conversion hardware that sits in between those two pieces of hardware?

all i seem to find is hardware that tries to completely replace the mixers and adds digital audio converters to the recipe... or the super expensive digital audio converters like Apagee makes.

Hopefully I'm just not looking in the right places...
 
you know you don't HAVE to use the built in pres. But there are a great number of interfaces available. Many of which have been talked about pretty extensively here.

Yeah I don't HAVE to - but I'd rather not repurchase things Ive already purchased if I dont have to.

Are the products you listed - are they all full interfaces with preamps? Thanks.

my point was that if they come on a product that otherwise suits your needs I wouldn't nit pick. And I personally think it would be hard for them to be any worse than a 1402...
