I'm a guitarist looking for a drum machine for home recording...a tabletop one like an Boss DR, not a drum set. What's the one with the most bang for the buck, and why?

I want one with assignable pads, and a wide variety of pre-programmed beats at least.

What other features should I be looking for?

What machines have people bought and like (or hated) & why?

Ribbit Ribbit man:]

Well, I've had four drum machines; seems as if that technology is on a back burner with the manufacturers; however, I use the Boss 770 and love it. I used to program drum patterns but it takes a great deal of time.

Most of the time I cruise the various patterns on the Boss and find one that I like for a particular tune; often it has an A/B option and that adds to the fun.

Nice clear sounds. There are other boxes out there that cost more but I'm not familiar with "why" they cost more.

The 770 is pretty easy to use and the sound quality is good.

770 is great..
jfrog, i have one for sale that has been used a total of 10 times. not even 2hours total.. make me an offer if you want it

Another vote for the 770. I program the drums on a midi track in Sonar, midi out to the 770, audio back in to the soundcard...presto!

Is the -770 progammable?

C9-2001: I probably shouldn't buy one now, as I've overspent my equipment budget in the last couple of months. Just out of curiosity, how much do you hope to get for it? Why are you selling it.

yO Croak & Ribbit:

Yea, verily, the 770 is programmable -- most of the drum boxes I've had, Yamaha and Alesis and now the Boss/Roland 770 are programmable; but, it takes such a long time to do that -- however, if that is what you like, do it.

I use the programmed patterns most of the time for my personal stuff -- other stuff requires other stuff.

have you considered a soft drum mach? they work well imho, and quite a few are free...

just a thought...

What is best depends on what you want. I have a Yamaha RY-30, which rocks! It's so tight and clear, and it has loads of sound possibilities thanks to filters and things.

But if you don't care about making weird noises, it might not be the best.

But it rocks!

I use the Boss Dr Groove DR202 drum machine!
Step & Real recording, 400 preset and 400 user programs, 50 song bank memory, 24 note polyphony and rythm quantization modes.
Excellent!
