What's so great about [add a player here]?

I can find something I like about practically every guitar player I ever heard, at the same time I can find something I don't like. Without adding names to the list, the ones who most impress me are the players who use the least amount of efx and processing. To play with just a guitar and amp, and still move an audience (to extacy or to tears) is the sign of a truly great guitarist.

I love CLapton and The Edge, but i will say...at least listening to the new U2 cd Half the reason he sounds cool is from a delay pedal...its almost doing the work for him hah. One of my favorite guitarists/idols right now is Omar Rodriguez-Lopez from the Mars Volta/At The Drive-In. He's so creative and is just an amazing guitarist.

omar's pretty fantastic. I saw the mars volta live, and it was one of the most incredible things I've ever seen. They had recently lost their drummer, and had someone replacing him, so rather than play their studio songs they did an improv set. I can't describe how awesome it was. If you listen to their studio albums, you might be interested to know John Frusciante (of red hot chili peppers) plays on 2 of the albums (the 2 newest, francis the mute and amputcture i believe).

As to the original post- I really only like Clapton and SRV off the original list. I can't stand U2, and think Hammett is very talented but just not quite in line with my music taste. What I like about clapton isn't really something I can describe. His playing just brings about emotion, I think Bell Bottom Blues is my favorite (I would add this to a "if you dont like this track, you don't like clapton" list), but the Key to the Highway jam with Duane Allman on the Layla album is probably one of the best guitar jams I've heard. It's just blues guitar at its best imo.

SRV had a killer sound, much of which came from him as opposed to his equipment. I doubt too many folks that saw him play live would have felt bored. He was born to play guitar and that's what he did. And he did it well. Guitar god? Probably not, but a great musician.

I don't think much about Kirk Hammet other than he studied with Satch. But I was never into Metallica, so no comment.

The Edge also created a sound, but his was less him and more effect. He did play what was needed for some great songs, so I'd label him as more of a musician than a guitar god.

Clapton? No comment. He is and always will be one of the greats. He's earned it. Why ask why?

B.B. King? I saw him live once. And I saw a video where he talks about his playing. I'd say he's a great bluesman but probably not an exceptional guitarist. I like how he makes his lucille speak though. His guitar really sings.

sirnothingness, good point about the edge. most of all I think he's very interchangable as a player. I think he could lose a hand, employ a mediocre player to play the things he had written, and most of the U2-fans wouldn't even recognize it's not the edge on stage :D .

... which makes me think of hammet again. i think with metallica you could replace anyone but hettfield and they'd still sound exactly the same. but maybe i'm wrong.

... which then again leads me to van halen. didn't dave lee roth (as a solo artist with vai) sound more like the original van halen than what was left of van halen? :D
back to topic!

Replacing ulrich would sure make'm sound better!

You all have mostly covered my views, but I figured I throw in a couple guitarists:

Mark Tremonti - In no way a god, most don't even know who he is. He's not a super-technical player, but I can almost instantly recognize his playing. Unique writing and playing style. You can imagine my confusion when I caught AlterBridge's debut single mid-song on the radio. "What!? This sounds just like Creed....oh wait, no Stapp!"

Mark Knopfler- Turned me on to the Dire Straits...which lasted for approximatley 4 songs LOL. I like Clapton's tone and style, but I think Knopfler is better. He can really make his guitar sing with a bright, clean shimmer.

That's all I can think of.
