ok so I have what I think is a fairly good setup concidering where I came from ... back in the day recording with a computer mic (the little thin white one's) into windows recorder....

now my setup is a em-u 0404 I/O, m-audio audio buddy preamp, AKG perception 100 mic, My monitoring chain isn't the best but Im learning how to mix well with what i have so I dont really want to change the monitors......

my question is where should I go next...... im looking for a clean signal going in.... as yall kno I record rap vocals and some singing.... I was thinking a new mic and preamp combo would be good....... but I dont really kno what to look for anymore.... im trying to stay under $500 for whatever I get so any advice is good......

AT3035 or a MXL 3000 (tube condenser)

and this pre http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Behringer-T1953-Tube-Ultragain?sku=182461, an buy a telefunken tube for it. I know "a team of scientists" so to speak lol, and they did that, and it rivals $1K + with some minor changes to the insides.

lol

honestly, I would say get some better monitors, but since you don't want to, yeah.

If I were you, I would spend the whole $500 on 1 thing good, and build from that, instead of try ing to upgrade bits of the studio at small increments. Why not throw the whole $500 and get a real decent mic, and then later down the road, do it to a preamp, at least the quality of each equipment grows substantially.

For the price... I'd say grab the AT4050 right now, it's on sale at musicianfriend for $599 brand new...

what they are?? hmmmmz.... I have the 4047, how does it compare??gotta go look at the specs... I speculate not much difference except that it has switchable patterns.

I used this one mic the other day, the 4060 . It's a great tube mic for the price. sounded pretty nice, had it running through a neve pre in the ssl room.

AT4050 has gotten good reviews..and is a top pick in alot of mags..

When I was recording in Vegas at Digital Insight studios, we used it frequently... We had the u87's, the C10, the Korby (friggin $6000 mic), and often times, we'd revert back to the AT4050 as it had such a warm sound to it. It used to be priced at $1299, and it's now at $599. I have to get one for my studio....

And yeah, I think the switchable patterns are the only real difference between the two.

I was thinking either the rode NT1-a or AT 3035 going into a DMP3...... i kno this dude around here who has a tube pre(i think its a Art) and the AT3035 and I really dont like the sound he gets with it..... it maybe because he compresses it going in.... or that he uses a untreated closet as the booth..... or that I was like 2 feet away from the mic recording........ but yea I didnt really like the sound of the tube pre tho

Yeah, he wasn't using it correctly than. I got to use the U-67 2 weeks ago man, it's a $9-12K mic, it was BEAUTIFUL sounding. Best tube mic I've ever used. We also ran it through the Neve pre

My "dream" mic: http://www.korbyaudio.com/products-system.html

The Korby Convertible... Available with 251, C12, U67, U47 and C800 head assemblies. It's multiple mics in one, all hand made.

Definitely worth the $6k.

Wait, so your saying, and the site is saying, that you would have a U67 assembly, a U47, and a C12, sitting there on the floor, and you can change assembly, and suddenly your getting u47 sound??? Does it sound like a true U-47 though, or U67 as the original, never used this mic before. HMMMMM.... How much are each assembly though..... or does it come with a set.

If it's what your saying, than crap....... I gotta get one for my closet.

Yeah man, the U67, it gave such great quality through the neve pre & SSL stages, that from that, without mixdowns or effects or anything, sounded like a already mastered, already mixed down track. It was perfect...

Yes, that's what I'm saying, and what they're saying...

Digital Insight Studios in Vegas had one, with the C12, U67, and U47 assemblies. It sounds exactly like their models, and it's amazing the difference from one capsule to the next. Like, if Celine Dion was in the studio, they'd use the C12 assembly, but if David Banner came in later, they might switch to the U67. It's so easy to switch the capsule as well, I mean... under 2 minutes to pop one off, and add the other.

The creator, Tracy Korby, if I remember correctly... Has been modifying mics for like, 20+ years... Mostly Neumann's and he does great work on C12VR's. But if you can find a studio that has one, go try it out... You'll be amazed.

Any places sell them, or I have to go through a special place, like heaven lol

That Mic or should i say those mics are insane lol $7K for all 4 assemblies

Hey fyre, I got the Rode NT1a, and it's not a bad mic....the best LDC I own...

seems kinda harsh on the highs compared to other LDCs I've used, but that may be my lack of decent room/vocal booth. You really gotta go somewhere and compare them using your own style. Never used any of the ATs, but heard a lot of good reviews for them.
