WDM provides faster response when playing Dxi software synthesizers in real time using an external MIDI controller.
WDM also provides ability to monitor through DirectX effects while recording, or “effects on input”.

MME & WDM - play existing MIDI tracks through the Dxi synth perfect timing.
MME & WDM - mix down MIDI tracks to audio tracks.
MME & WDM - run the Dxi synth output into DirectX audio effects.

All this information came from the cakewalk FAQ pages.

WDM drivers come from the soundcard manufacturers (though some common consumer ones are also available on the WinME/Win2000 CDs too).
