Whats causing distorted guitar to sound washed out?

The part i'm refering to is the rhythm electric chorus at 2:09 through.

Its a double tracked, hard panned section with delay added.

Am I just being over critical considering the amount of time I worked on it yesterday?

Too much gain?

I will admit I failed to noodle with the amps eq on that channel. I very rairly if every use that channel for distortion since its my clean channel in pushed mode. (Mesa Rectoverb). I may have had the highs cranked and lows rolled off for a bright clean tone and didn't notice.

Any ideas? Pointers? You guys suck? Don't quit your day job?

Oh and the mix is extremely rough. haven't finished tracking yet. So the clips and pops you hear are from cuts in the track. Will clean them up with cross fades later.

Thanks for listening guys. This forum has been a lifesaver with the building and operating of my new studio. I haven't posted much but long time lurker.

Yeah I think the main reason your distorted guitar sounds so washed out was too much gain. A secondary cause might be in the way it was played. If you want definition between the chords make sure you play with definition between the chords.

Clean guitar sounded pretty good. Acoustic guitar sounded decent, but it was a bit quiet.

Got it! Thanks. Going to retrack the distorted guitar parts tommorow. I checked the amp last night and the highs are rolled off and the bass is turned up so I'm with you in thinking its a gain issue. But intresting about what you say about the definition between chords. Since that part is just chord strumming that very well could be the case.

As far as the acoustic is concerned thats just a base track we used for the drummer to play along to. We will be going back and retracking that 2 takes 2 different mics panned.

Thanks again for the advice. Much appreciated.

Horrible glitch at 2.07.5 dude. Nothing wrong with the guitars to my ears. Hard to know what you are looking for without lyrics though.

Yea man those are all over the place right now but that one is REALLY noticeable. Its due to how we tracked. We tracked the song in parts. Drums chorus, drums verse, drums chorus 2, drums verse 2, etc. I started the recording 1 bar before and after each "section" so I have a 1 bar overlap on both sides of the marker. So I just need to go back and move the cut to a place where the waveform matches a little better. And if I cant get it to go away 100% that way I'll throw in a cross fade to fix it completely.

I remember hearing that glitch shortly after tracking. I believe its on the kick track. But it should go away later in the mixing stages. Just haven't gotten around to messing with the tracks that much.

Thanks for your comment. The guitar player says he thinks it sounds good too. Thats why I reached out here. Maybe I'm being over critical.
