What's a POD

I hear a bunch of people talking about POD's but I have no idea what they are. I know they're used for a bunch of things, but I'd be most interested in doing drum tracks on them.

Could somebody give me some info on what they are? Is it a product, or a product classification (like a mic). And just as importantly, about how much $$ they are?

Thanks.

It's a brand. Mostly guitar modeling amps and effects. Doesn't have anything to do with drums.

For future reference, when you hear of someone talking about something and you don't know what it is, do a search on musiciansfriend.com or sweetwater.com. and it will return with product descriptions.

A POD uses modeling technology to sound like various guitar amplifiers. It's used mostly for direct recording of an electric guitar. You plug a guitar directly into it and select one of the amp simulations, such as a clean Fender Twin sound, a Marshall Stack sound, etc. It's used as an alternative to miking a guitar amplifier. The advantages are that it gives you a variety of sounds and you don't have to turn your guitar up loud. The disadvantage is that it doesn't quite capture the magic and tone of a real tube amplifier.

There are many other brands but the POD was a popular version that came out several years ago. Go to www.line6.com and check it out. They also have a version called the Bass POD for recording bass guitar.

Digitech Genesis 3, Behringer V-Amp, SansAmp GT-2, are examples of similar products.

POD's are small, ass shaped creatures that slowly take over your subconcious and eventually make you believe that your guitar tone doesn't suck. ;)

Just for the record, POD also works very well into a reference/power amp and then into a guitar cab. My experience suggests that it isn't the sound of a tube amp that POD doesn't capture. It's the sound of a nice mic'd speaker cab that it can't reproduce. I ust the POD in live mode (cab model disabled) into a Carver PM125 power amp bridged to 8 ohm mono, Then to a Marshall 1X12 cab with an 8 ohm vintage 30. This setub simply rocks for recording! You can mic the cab with a SM57 or better, at the lower SPL than a cranked combo amp, a condenser mic backed off a bit- C2000B,mc012,603,MK319 etc., works even better. It tricks the recorder into thinking I've got a cranked up amp, provides the depth and resonance of a real mic'd cab, and is quiet. It's also a very good live setup, you just use bigger poweramp(s) and cab(s).-Richie
P.S.- This thing is not for drums.

Don't forget the Johnson J-station!

I hear tell that Gidge likes playing with his Johnson.
