what's a good mic pre?

Hi

Just curious about what would be a good mic pre-amp to buy if I was going to spend around $1500-$2000 US?

Do I go vintage, or new/vintage, or what?

I want to experience that 'Oh, that's how they do it!!!' feeling when I plug in my mic.

Also, I'm trying to decide between a Digi001 setup or Edirol's DA2496. Any opinions? I want ultra-low latency!
