Hey... I'm looking for a processor that will take any instrument (say a trumpet or clarinet), and let them play with distortion, pitch change, chorus, etc. I want to have my kids at school try it out for kicks, but then I'll use it in my studio at home. Any suggestions in the $500 and under range?

It would also be cool to have a program that would show the sound waves to them as they play, maybe there's a way to adapt the wav players to do this...

Thanks for suggestions.

As for processing units, I don't know but to show the waves as they play??? Most progs I use U can see the waveform as it plays. Or you might mean the waveform actually fluxuating on the screen, if U mean that one, the newest Windows Media Player has that option, it has a bunch of crazy visualizations.

Come on guys... how about the DOD Votec? It says it's for horns and voices with reverb flange AND distortion. What about that? Will it do what I want?

Well, I haven't used the Votec, but I think a mid-level guitar preamp/effects unit will do the job. Something like the Boss VF-1 (I think thats the number) or an ART 2000 Express (not made anymore, but can be found on E-Bay). Both of these units do effects and have distortion. Hope that helps get you on the right track.

Peace, Jim

Thanks for the heads up on the VF1, Jim. It seems to be what I need. There were fantastic reviews about it at Harmony central. But my problem is the MPX1 got rave reviews as well, and someone seemed to indicate it had distortion. If it does, it might be worth the extra do re mi. Anybody out there (Bruce)know if it has distortion? Also the VF 1 seems to be able to sound like other instruments.

well any guitar processor would do the trick no? Any machine will "process" the sound you pump into it. Nab a cheap zoom505. As far as programs to watch wav files in pretty colors...check out goldwav
