I've had a home studio for about 3 years now but for recording vocals I've just run my mic to mixer to comp with no outsource comp or EQ. I don't have a lot of money to spend on rack equip and I would only being using the rack equip that I would get for vocals so basically what do you think is essential for me to get to work with my vocals instead of trying to use compression/eq etc.. through an audio program?

Is the room treated? If not, that's the most cost effective way to go.

I don't quite understand what your saying. Do you have an audio program? Its better to add processing after the fact with vocals.

Oh ok yea I'm currently using Adobe Audition 2.0 and use the effects within the program but am wondering if I should use comp/eg with rack equip or just soley do all effects within the comp.

That is a bigger question than anyone of us can really answer for you.

Plug-ins and software effects have come a long way, and theres quite a few who get the job done.
Rack gear will almost always sound better, BUT, only if its high end gear.
So if you got a few grand lying around and want to get rid of them, outboard processing might be the way to go.

I think for most people on this board ist mostly plug ins, with the exeption of EQ on the mixing board, and maybe an outboard compressor.

What kind of results are you hoping to achieve? What is your budget?

I think you should just use the effects in the program. Like nightfire said it, you need very high end gear to make to much of a difference. I would say invest in treating your room and microphones and preamps. These kinds of things will be much more noticeable than the difference between plugin and hardware effects imo. Hope this helps.
