Hello,

I would like some suggestions on how to improve my home studio (what would you recommend to be my next step).

What I got today:

PC win 7 64bit
16 GB DDR3 ram
HDD 500 + 500 + 1000 + 640 GB
24” TFT Screen

Mackie Onyx 1640 (gen.1) w. fw-card
Adam A7X
ADK A-51 Type V
Roland XP-10 Keyboard
Peavey Transtube 212 Special
2008 Gibson ES-335
1997 Epiphone Les Paul Elite EB (the all black & gold original Florentine version, not the later cheaper ES model)
1996 Epiphone Casino
Yamaha CPX-5
Ibanez AW-15-LG
Cubase 5
A few effects/synths/VST/VSTi’s. (from PSP Audioware, Fabfilter, Mokafix, Softube and Native Instruments) – I prefer to have not too many and from a few number of brands/developers.

I am at the moment considering buying the M-audio Axiom Air 61 and an Focusrite 18i8 (as an alternative/so that I don’t need the big mixing console all the time/for "smaller" recordings/as a "sketch-book").
I am also considering the Yamaha CPX-1000 as a future “upgrade”, but that would be a little further down the road as it feels today.

I would like to have all(!) your opinions on my thoughts and yours on how to improve my small home studio.

Yours

Well...you need to consider your ultimate goals, how far are you looking to go with your recording SOP....then consider your budget....and then spend the money on that next thing you feel needs to be improved based on your goals, budget and what you consider deficiencies..

What I would get or someone else as my "next purchase" may not be anything you would get.

Thx Miroslav,

Well of course I got all that cover - where/how far I would like to go and so on. I'm, apart from that, more thinking of what would be the next thing to add or what in my current setup are absolutely awfull - despite that it works for me at the moment. Maybe I have missed something that someone have found to be absolutely brilliant, a must have that would improve my setup.

So any thoughts on the Focusrite 18i8 and/or the M-audio Axiom Air 61 as an add-on to my current setup, or, other things that would be a good add-on as well.

I'm in to the pop/rock world: Bryan Adams, Roxette, McCartney (especially Flaming Pie CD), Oasis, Gyllene Tider (like the song "det är över nu", swedish band with roxette front man - plz see youtube), nickelback, Stiftelsen etc...

Lava lamp? :D Honestly I would say buy a replacement/improvement for what annoys you most in your work process, or prevents you from doing something you fancy. For me it's my ageing and very slow computer, and not having a bass guitar - every song I write I get annoyed about those two things so I know for sure I need them. Still, I've been thinking that for about 6 months now. Takes me ages to spend money.

Really I would say if you'd not sure, save you're money until you are. But yeh, sound proofing and a mic sound like good ideas. Sound proofing being one thing that will improve your recording a lot. Or so I'm told, because I don't have that either.

Well Thanks everyone. One thing, the a-51 s type V is à mic. A bass guitar would be quite nice I must say but I would also have to admit I have got no clue what bass guitar to buy... Anyone got any experience of the axiom air 61? ( I know it is brand new).

Sorry, I didn't realize the ADK was a mic. Not sure what you mic up (vocals, amps, acoustic guitars?), but I would think a differnet mic or two would be worthwhile.
As for the keyboard, do you need better MIDI input/control in your recording situation, that's what the MAudio keyboards are really good for.
