Ok, im using a Tascam 414 and I need:

2 channels (stereo) for drums
2 Guitar tracks
1 Vocal track
1 Bass track

With the tascams inputs, what would you do? sorry, im new.

Is this a live recording, or can we bounce to a sub-mix for more tracks?

you can bounce yes. Im kinda lost. i was recording drumset and both guitars on 1/2 and the vocals on 3 and bass on 4. is there a better way/

If we can do submixes, we in biz

If you want to stay in stereo we'll need another deck to mix down to. A good stereo VCR will work well, a normal cassette deck will do.

Record drums, bass, and rythym guitar. Mix onto second deck taking into consideration more tracks will be added so we want the drums to be a bit hot, and possibly the bass/guitar depending on the tone. You may have to do a few mixes before you nail it, so don't record over the original tracks.

Transfer the submix back to 2 tracks on the 414 (not over the originals!), and you now have 2 open tracks for another guitar, and vocals. You can repeat this process, but the quality will start to deteriorate rapidly after a couple of bounces. You can compensate for this a bit with EQ, but too much and it'll sound like a really low-bitrate MP3. Phase artifact city.

Edit: one more thing: turn off that DBX, and tape over the switch!:D
