what would you use?

Samson MEDIAONE 4a Monitors
Alesis ONES
Behringer MS40
M Audio Studiophile Av 40
M Audio bx5

Which of these would you buy for a start up home studio

The only ones I've even heard before are the Alesis. They sounded pretty good but at this price range, they're all gonna be fairly similar.
The trick is going to be learning them in YOUR room and how they translate.

I started off on a hi-fi stereo and up graded (almost everything :o ) as I learned what/where I was lacking.
The new monitors came after I treated my room. ;)

I would go with a set of wharfdales, for the money you can't beat them.

The way you say that makes them sound inexpensive......NOT! Their over $200.... way out of my budget. I know you get what you pay for... but those are out of my range.

In the price range I'd be inclined to hold off.

I know it's easy for me to say, but if you're half serious you're likely to spend money on monitors a good few times over the years.

Just do without until you can afford to spend your money once. :)

I don't know your age or circumstances, but $200 is nothing for monitors.

I guess I could use these Yamaha 8" speakers I have till I can save a few more $. Will these tie me over?

Hard to know for sure, but I imagine so.
Put the focus on learning their shortcomings. Listen to music that you know very very well so that you can hear how it sounds on them.

It's a ghetto approach but it'll help your mixes translate better until you have cash to splash. :)
Treating the room is a cheaper upgrade, and it'll help a lot in terms of really hearing what's happening.

DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT get the M Audio Studiophile Av 40 as your main monitor pair. They are simply just multi-media speakers (it doesn't even say studio monitors on the box) for people who like to watch movies on their computer. Just for the enthusiast who wants a better set of computer speakers compared to standard Logitech junk. However, I do have these in my tracking room so the talent can listen back to their take with having to constantly have headphones strapped to their head. That, and I use it to talk to them when they aren't wearing their headphones (like when they're setting up or tearing down). I think the frequency response starts at only 90hz, which is pretty useless for mixing. So I'll use them to check my mixes in a different room to see how it sounds on a non-bass-heavy speaker in a room with different acoustics. Just not good for a main pair.

I'd say with the BX5A. They're very affordable and do the trick for the budget. I use the BX5A Deluxe and find them fairly neutral, although a set of frequency adjustment knobs on the back would be nice to adjust for the room. Not a huge deal though. I would suggest the BX8a Deluxe, but they're more expensive and for me, too large for my control room. Would create more problems than benefits.

Thanks, The AV40's looked more like Pc speakers rather then studio monitors. I guess that would be why they are only $70 at the local used music store.

Alesis Ones - I heard them recently in a demo studio and they seemed very good value for money.
