Being an intermediate at this, yet, trying to get the best sound I can from my meager studio; what would it take to get someone to come down and listen/analyze my space? Am I talking $1,000 or $100? What should I be doing to make my space sound as good as it possibly can? I know these are open questions, but although I am a practiced musician, I am clueless when it comes to studios.
Maybe halfway in between. It depends partly on how famous an acoustician you hire. But you don't need to pay anyone if you're willing to spend a few hours reading. Start with my Acoustics FAQ:

It's in there.
Also, a big benefit of hiring an acoustician is to check your work before you spend a bunch of money designing a new room. Or when you want verification of a room's reverb time and frequency response. If your goal is merely to treat an existing room, and you're not made of money, it's not really necessary to go to the trouble and expense of hiring a pro.
