What will the Roland recorders work with?

Roland pros,
I've been considering buying a VS1880 or VS1680 but I have a couple of questions. First of all, will these recorders work with computer software other than the Emagic and Liquid Audio programs that come with it? A friend of mine just mentioned the soundwave format that roland uses is proprietary (or just atypical) and most computer software won't work with these machines. Is this factual info. or will they work with programs like Cakewalk, Protools, etc. (or even the MOTU program that comes with the 2408?)
Also, does anyone know if these units will sync up with Adats and how well they work together?
thanks, D. Wright

Hey there all who are checking this out. I'm going to reply to myown question just because I thought you all may care to know the answer. I called the Roland co. and they said that for either the 1680 or 1880 to sync to an Adat would take an external time piece (which makes sense). They also said that the only way to through stuff down to a computer would be to do a direct recording from the Roland unit into the computer itself (the same way you would record a guitar or something else into your computer). Appearantly it won't through down wave files any other way.
I may me a little of on this, but I fairly certain this is what the Roland tech. rep. said (just in case any one was interested).

Yo DW:

Just saw an ad in the lastest issure of EM for the New Roland 8 track VS 890.

Looks cool.

I do know that you can only burn CD's from a Roland to a Roland CD burner, at least that's the way it has been for a while.

The 890 has 24 bit converters -- nice sounds.

comes with Emagic and Logic VS software for PC inputs.

[Really don't know much about that stuff yet as I use an 8 track Yam minidisc in my studio. But, I'm always looking to upgrade with something that won't take five years to learn.]

You can check out this new unit on the Roland site.
