To promote takes a hell of a lot of "live action" events. So we need a way that each of us, in our respective regions and maybe within our respective genres (but a "lollapalooza" type thing can work as well) can not just network online but come up with shows where we can all come together [again per region/area/genre] to hold events!!

For instance, I am planning a show right now - - a talent show, but it will feature various "indie artists" who have their "shit" relatively together.

It would be great if we could come together to work on this type of thing - even if for instance there is like . . an open mic venue in your area (or 2+) . . we could all come together to say as many of us as possible will all show up at a particular open mic to perform. Then we could do some fliers for that night - and make it look like we are putting on our own show!! - Best of all, as long as we keep it decent, professional, the club will never really know that we sucka-punched em.

(MidAtlantic for instance is where I am basically located - but more specifically: Central Virginia.

So there is a club that does Open Mic on Thrusday nights. Y not have those of us who are in the area - do a promo-flyer saying we r performing at Club X on Thursday Sept. 14 starting at 8pm. Pass out the flyers and get ready to rock the mic.

I think a good thing to do here would be a database-driven website. You could have regions (Northeast, East Coast, Southeast, South, Southwest, Central, Midwest, West, North, Northwest, etc.) and possibly break that down by state, and then by location, because not everyone can get everywhere in every state.

Then, someone could go in and put their "get together" name in there, the location, and a form for people to go in and sign up. Then, the people who sign up could be contacted by the "promoter" to see if they're really going to show up, and if they're the kind of act they're looking for.

For instance, Let's say someone wants to start an event called Rap-A-Palooza (work with me here). They could go in, and start their project, saying they're in <region name>, in <state>, in <venue city name here>.

Then, rappers in that area could sign up, and the person who started the project could contact X number of them (let's say 20), and check out how legit they are. Then, if they check out, they get an invite to come, and start the promo process with the fliers and such.

At this point i would take whatever I can get!!!

I really am tired of going to various events and seeing only a handful of crowd participants - and the handful is uusally related to one of the groups performing - so really the NET EFFECT is that there is nex to nobody there - OF COURSE YOUR OWN PEOPLE ARE GOING TO CHEER FOR U (AND IF U TELL EM TO, THEY WILL HATE ON ANYONE ELSE - TO TRY TO MAKE U LOOK THAT MUCH BETTER)

sux

Do you have the Greensheet in Virginia? Here in the Dallas area, we have the Greensheet, which is basically a "classified ads" newspaper. Couldn't you advertise in something like that?

You could probably do it on Google groups. Maybe advertise on your local public-access cable stations...just a thought.

You're right, though. The hardest part is getting the word out. What about going to a High School football game, and passing out some fliers to people? That might work, especially if you get a few thousand fans on a Friday night.

yeah im a do the hi school ting this week n on going, im gon look into the cable acces thing - not too many people around here go that route!!!

green sheet>?
well we have "something" of that nature - but its not that utilized - only a handful of people know about it (at least within the hip hop community)

You wouldn't really do that, right?

hell no - i git pissed off when i see it - but i see it, trust me!!!!

Yeah I definitely agree that this is a great idea. Unfortunately, I can't support it at all right now, because I'm deployed in afghanistan. But when I'm back in the game I would love to hook people up with gigs in the northeast, and be likewise hooked up.

You take care over there in Afghanistan, ok?

The best way to promote the music community is to adapt to the different marketing strategies available in the market today, such as the TV, print, radio, and Internet. But then, it's always good when everybody's moving into one direction. There's much greater force in there.

i feel u - hopefully some things like that will start clickin

what i find funny - maybe yall can chime in on this as well

i meet a lot of artists who live in my area (VA) whats funny is that i end up making more "connections" with VA artists who are not from VA. that is, they live in VA but come from NYC or PA or NC. the artists i meet from VA and have always lived in VA (esp. Central VA) are like . . . "man whatever!!"

is this a "me" thing?

It doesn't seem like just a "you" thing. It's probably some type of ego thing, or a thing where they think they can do it themselves. Maybe they aren't taking the VA music scene seriously, I don't know.

A connection is a connection, though, right?

tru. now when i say "connection" imean like: collabo, cross-promotion

and then i hear so many stories . . . "yeah i would have signed with Def Jam - but what they were offereing me . . I could do that myself" you can change "def jam" to just about any other company out there -

I understand what you're talking about by connections. Same thing as a contact.

I think your other statement is why so many people are taking the independent music route. That, and if you sign with a company, say goodbye to a good portion of the money you could make.
