Hi,

I just found a 2" Ampex 456 tape in a flea market. It's marked 24-track master and dated 1987, and also contains one 8" floppy disk which seems to be a backup of the mixer settings. I didn't know that mixers could save on floppy in these years.

Anybody knows what mixer(s) may have been used for that tape ?
What was the first model to feature that ?

8" Floppy disks drives were developed and used between 1972 and 1977, so any mixer that used that format of drive would have had to have been made between that era. Names like SSL would be a "most likely" candidate as they were one of the more popular developers of mixer automation and data recall but there could have been others too. Is there any track sheet in the tape case that denotes the artist, studio, machine used and so on? That might give you a more viable clue to work with in figuring it out. But, even if you do and you don't own that mixer, the disk is essentially useless to you. And if it was a classic album by a famous artist, why is their master tapes showing up at a flea market?

Cheers! :)

The SSL at the studio I intern at uses Floppy for recalls.....48 ch. board recalls...... *shutters*

You can never know why one 2" tape shows up in a flea market. My guess is that it's possibly recorded by an unknown artist or group which never surfaced, and that some guy kept the tape and disposed of it 24 years later. The only information is that the artist/group is called "Zeitoun" and that there are two titles names "Calypso". One is listed as "mixed" and one is listed as "slave". No info on the stuff used.
