A faster CPU.
If you already have 256 or better RAM and a 7200 hard drive that is set up properly and defraged, I doubt a HD or RAM upgrade will help.

dude. I was gonna say that but was afraid I was wrong....
I upgraded from a 1GHz to a 1.6GHz athlons both times and actually dropped RAM (from 512 to 256). It made all the difference in the world. I sometimes have seven cakewalk plugs running at once and no drops...

I honestly believe the hard drive is the slowest part of any computer,I presently own 3 Western Digital 120 gig. 8mb. S.E. drives and all i can say is wow,they smoke...yes other things can be a factor,such as type of cpu,ram like some of the other guys here have said,esecially when recording...seems like every little thing is a factor right down to the playback buffers...GOODLUCK

I have read some interesting stuff on how hard drives are not as big of a factor as some think. Most of this was in the context of wether to go scuzi or not though. I think I read it at www.pcrecording.com

don't need a faster cpu got dual Athlon MP 1900+
i got the faster HD special edition 80 gig 8 mb cache WD . Haven't recorded on it yet but i can't wait. Seeing i need more space anyway it was the logical choice

In my case what I found out (over months of agony) is that my MOBO for whatever reason doesn't like two memory sticks. I dropped my memory to one 256 stick and all my drop outs, sudden crashes and other evil went away! I've now run across other pepple who have solved problems using Athlon systems by using only one stick. With two sticks I was even getting blue screens when installing XP! And I've used both memory sticks, one at a time in my current setup and bam, no problems!

the problem you just posted is more than likely an Incompatibilty between the two ram sticks...or maybe even just a faulty stick.
Were they installed @ the time of purchase or was one added @ a later stage?

Bought at the same time, but I should have also stated that I tried the memory out of my kids duron and had similar results. Since then he has taken this memory and tried it in his machine with no problems. Has also tested it with memtest386, no problems. An IT guy here at work has also mentioned he never installs more than one stick on Athlon systems. But then there are plenty of people out there running more than one stick with no problem.
I don't know what makes sense and I'm no PC expert. This MOBO I have can take DDR or SDRAM and I think I'm gonna get a 512 stick of DDR, but then I'm not so sure I need it unless I start doing a bunch of real time plugin's..

well i just recorded on the new HD..and i was pleasantly surprised no drop outs!..its not like the CPU usage was any less either...well now i know i made the right purchase..i guess a factor could of been the system files and where iw as recording too were on the same HD until i got the new one..
