what tone do you think would be best?

So I have a pretty good question for everyone. As of lately there has been alot of recordings that I have heard and even tried myself using impulse cabs and amp modeling. I have a pretty good half stack, here is my signal train. I run my baritone 7 string into a mxr 6 band eq, into a boss ns-2, into a crate blue voodoo 120 head, into a peavey 5150 cab. I have a Seinheiser e609 mic to record my tone. Ok, so back to my original topic. What tone do you think would be better, can you beat an actual tube guitar amp with an original 5150 cab, or do you think i could get better results using the emulations and impulses that I have heard sound pretty good as well.

Tone is subjective. Mic placement can affect it a lot. DI with amp modeling can give you all kinds of range. You just need to experiment and find something you like.

I usually just plug straight into one of my tube amps...and I get the tones I want, and prefer that to anything simulated, but you have to find what works for your recording situation. There isn't any one "holy grail" tone.

I agree completely.

If you get a sound you like out of the amp/fx combo, and can record it so that the recorded sound is what you want, then don't ask, just do it!

DI is definitly the way to go. This way you can re amp later if you don't like the guitar tone. Its hard to find an amp sim that sound realistic w/o all the fizz. Plus, if you re amp, you can play with mic placement without having to touch the guitar again.

I will have to agree, after all the things I have learned from people off this site, my recordings are sounding better and better the more I experiment with DI recordings, and even the mic'd recordings.
