I'm starting a recording studio and I know what I need as far a
computer goes but my recording hardware is another story.
I've been looking at a roland studio package pro although it's still
availiable in a few places it has been discontinued.
does anyone know about any other companys that sell similiar
digital recording setups?
am i better off mixing and matching equip like soundcards, mixers
and software?

the roland studio package pro only records 8 tracks at a time ideally i'd like
an interface that would allow me to record 16 at once.

please help!

Computer components can be very particular in DAW use. Make sure you investigate fully the components you plan to use. As far as soundcards .... There are many options that offer expandability. Some of the MOTU lines for example. Hit there website to give you an idea of the types of I/O's offered. Many other manufactures offer similar setups. The end choice, however is yours.

MOTU .... http://www.motu.com/

Sheeesh ... it would seem as tho I work for MOTU the way I post about them, Honestly I don't. I'm just very pleased with my purchase of the 828mkII, so with that in mind, I have nothing but good things to say about them. Obviously, there is a multitude of other manufactures out there that offer awesome products as well.
Good luck in your choices.

What's your budget ?

What type of music are you recording ?

How many tracks to you need to record simultaneously ?

If you are using a PC, beware of MOTU stuff. I own and use a 2408mkII. The gear is good stuff, but the support from MOTU for PC is NONEXISTANT. I never recieved any email answers and would be on the phone for hours. It took 3 months before I finally got a sound out of my card (PIII 650, win98se, CEP 1.2). I was luck to eventually find a kind soul in a forum who helped me get it up and running.

Because of such bad support, I will never buy anything from them again.

motu

i'm really interested in a motu probably the 2408mk3 but i'll be using it with a pc. the motu lines or so appealing cause they are expandable when you need to be able to record more tracks at once. I've read up on the 2408mk3 on the motu site. it comes with a pci 424 card. What kind of sound card should I be looking into? Has anyone else had anyone problems using a pc with their motu?

Nope.

I have a 2408 mkII. I plan to use a Cranesing Spider to track with, and a Benchmark DAC to monitor with, and I dig the digital I/O and expansion options.

Then again I have not had occasion to evaluate their tech support, it has played very nice with my systems(AMD Duron 1Ghz, and now Pent4 3.2Ghz).

dude go for the aardvark q10. it has 8 inputs and eaisly expandible to 16 or up to 32 i think. it was built FOR the pc. i think it's compatible with mac too but this is more recent. kinda like motu is more recently compatible with pcs.
if you don't need so many mic inputs there are other aardvark products with less that are a bit cheaper. then again there are alot of other manufactures out there too.

the q10 doesn't get a lot of hype since it's not a firewire device but if you are not going to be very mobile then who really cares.

Yea.. The Q10 is in the neighborhood of the Roland SPP price wise. $800-$850... and a $75 rebate if you buy before 6/30/04 I think. Bonus is the Q10 setup is expandible. As long as you got the pci slots, you can use up to four Q-10s on the same machine. I guess the pres are nice too. Comes with a lite version of Cubase. If I wasn't still paying off the IRS and getting out of some credit card debt, I'd be all over one of those...

If you want to record 16 tracks simul and you have a firewire port you could get 2 Presonus FirePods (each have 8 analog ins and are about $600USD) and daisychain them. It's a little less expensive than the Motu's.
