we don't need rest!!
well...I liked this tune by samicide...so I thought I'd give it a whirl.
I recorded it Friday night...hated it, and erased it... redid it today.

Now...I can give all kinds of excuses (I've got at least 10), down to mixing and recording on headphones:eek:  ..it was late...the wife was asleep:rolleyes:

so.....the tune is called What A Difference ...

and is at nowhere with the link of:

Doesn't sound bad. WTF nobody listens to my feedback anyway. Sounds nice. Wait for crawdad or someone you'll actually listen to for any crits.

.....WARNING- VERY BAD ACID.....
......very disturbing stuff mix. Makes me wanna run for the Prozac! I dont have the recording that sami did of this anymore, im gonna have to go and find it again. Are any of these tracks his? I like the drums alot....very fitting. And those vocs.......damn. .......fitting as well. Sami can be proud of this cover..... cool stuff mix!!!:D g

As usual the mix is great and the quality of the recording is professional. What do you record on?

You did achieve what you suggested to sam about getting a better piano sound. The piano sounds damn near real. The strings are rich and full(as usual)......the drums sound ok,I hear that reverse cymbal....What do you play drums on?Are they midi triggered from a keyboard or something?

Oh my,you just said that awful F-word that Pootpie had me saying over and over to him the other day.;)

The vocals are kinda buried but I think you did that on purpose eh?

This is a quality mix and recording to me.How do you get such crisp clean recordings?

Ok,Im done. You aint gonna get laughed off the clinic unless you do a cover of a Pootpie tune.:D

I wanna hear that vocal, has a cool Capt. Beefheart vibe. It needs to catch up with the drums, which sound good but are outweighing other parts of the mix.
No laughing here, nice work on this. The intro is very cool, what did you use for that?
Mixing on phones is problematic, I'm in the same boat. Also doing the night shift recording thing, I have to wait until everybody's out of the house to do vocals or any live percussion.

p.s. to Chad: I've read your critiques of others' works, you always give an informed response. Lighten up on yourself, man!

Chris,
I listened on the 'phones. To me, the flow seems off, especially in the verses. Sort of like there are 2 or 3 driving forces to the song, (drums, lyrics, synths) and there isn't one that is leading the way...

All the individual sounds are good, just tighten 'em up a bit. And bring up the vox a tad, too..

Queue

but then again, I'm really tired....

queue...yeah...flow...that's excuse number 4. There are timing issues...(but I didn't say that). thanks for spilling the beans, dude... I owe ya now!;) vocs up....naw...don't think so...
seriously...thanks for the time/comments.

mkg (what does that stand for?..that ingredient in chineese food?) ah...you heard the "flow" thing too with the vocals...hhmmm...
the synths are all roland expansion cards, lots of the orchestral stuff. oh..and the world card...tuned down an octave or two for some effects here and there.
phone mixing...hhhmm ...problem number 1!! Actually, I'm getting to like the sony 7506's almost better than my monitors, and it keeps the pictures hanging straight on the walls too! thank you too..

kramer...record on the 'puter w/cooledit pro. a decent collection of plugins too. drums are played 'live' via my roland keyboard (I skipped the sequencer on this one)....hence the "flow" issue (problem #4...see above).
pootie pie tune next!!...but I didn't play guitar on this one...and I only know TWO chords... might leave me out on his stuff.

guernica... acid...been almost 25 yrs now....I think. (head shakes violently with a twitch). sammy's got his 'original' still at his site, and a current thread going with the link. definately the better version (even though cyan says his stuff suxxx ...that's with THREE x's, too!!)

chad...I read your threads too!! really:) thanks for the listen, bud...much appreciated. Now...go post a thread with a song that will end world hunger...and we'll all respond, I bet:p peace...

mixmkr....oh..that's me...I don't have to reply to my post..phew!!!! hey...I just did though..eh?

Nowhere won't let me have it. I'll try again later.

Hey Mix..

Excellent sound!

There is just a little timing problem  no big deal though.

Whoever is singing sounds like satan :)

The music sounds a bit like a song that you would hear on the pink floyd movie.

You'll never believe it... but all the songs that I have done so far I forgot to pan the stereo channels hard left and right going into the mixing board from my keyboard(basically, where all my sound was coming from) This whole time all my mixs were messed up :( I feel pretty dumb. I panned the channels and It sounds great now... you'll have to hear when im done :)

I just had to fend off a hack/DOS attack on the NWR media server. Should be back to normal now.

mixmkr... at about 19 seconds into the song, there is a sound effect that sounds kinda like an electrical thing starting up, or like a generator...how did you get that sound...ACID or what? Thanks a lot for you help.

Friggin criminals are everywhere!

Good cover of a sam tune. I really liked the drums a lot! I didn't find the timing issues to be very intrusive, at least not to where it bothered me too bad. Didn't care for the vocal sound much though. If you're trying to get the "Sam" sound you need more processing and even if you weren't.....to me that style of vocal requires a bit heavier hand with the FX.

It's really cool that you did a cover of another homerecer's tune and I think it's an interesting version of it. I hope we see some more of that.

Even if you say no, I still say--turn the friggin vocal up!

I hear a cool track going by with this, gee I think thats a vocal, submerged underneath. Lyrics? Oh, he's saying something, but I can't make it out. Good sounds, cool arrangement. Nice FX too.

No vocal is about the same to me as having really loud drums and a teeny bass guitar. Or a loud rhythm and a totally buried lead. Its just the gestalt of the thing. Shit, I seem to say the same crap all the time, so sorry if I continue to repeat myself. Rant, rant, rant. :D

Just my opinion, but I've hear VERY few, if any, records that mixed the vocal that way. Maybe I'm just out of touch. Probably! :D Everything else was crystal clear. OK, I'm done. Won't happen again...(maybe)! :D

mixmkr I am speechless..

I can barely comprehend this version.. It is like some type of dark acid filled nightmare of torment.. In one way, I love it.. It is darker and even less hopeful than the original...

You hacked the piano, but it's not that noticable because of all of the evil swirls and nightmare-ish spacey strings..

I have to look at it like it's not the same song..

Your vocals are tormenting and fitting.. I've listened to it 5 times now and I still cant even comprehend it..

you took what I thought was a gentle goodnight weeping tune, and turned it into the type of music they might be playing in hell! :D

It is unsettling in a different way than the original.. There is even less of a happy ending.. You took the sad feel and turned it into something much darker and angrier.. It's like the original on steroids.. I didnt think you had something this dark in you! I'm hearing new things every time I listen..

I like it on many levels.. I am still a bit shell shocked.. It's on listen #7 and I cant wipe the grin off my face..

Will Cyan like this version?

I am speechless..

incredible..

thanks

Heavens to Pink Floyd!! That's so disturbing, Roger Waters could've had his hands in it. Mikey WAY likes it!:D

Interesting. Very Dark, Very Floyd imo. I want to hear the vocals more. Drums maybe a tad loud.

Oh My........not sure if that was the wisest thing to listen to when I just woke up. Added levels of torment and agnst, treachory and anger from the original. I loved the way you attached the vocals with the delivery and effects. I don't think I can laugh anymore;).

Fine, fine cover.......thanks for putting it up.

Yes, quite a departure from the original (I have a firm grasp of the obvious).

I like the panning during the intro. The piano, strings, and drums sound great together. I like the "yells" that begin at about 2:15. Uh oh - you used the f word. Naughty naughty :D

I didn't care a whole lot for the long delay on the vocals. It might have been used to better effect if used in a small section of the song somewhere.

spooky

even more haunting than the original, im gonna go spin it backwards and see if my walls start to bleed!:p .

very cool!

peace
