what kind of tape do I need for Tascam tsr 8??

Can I use any half inch tape? Ampex 456 grand master?? Or is that specifically for mastering on 1/2 inch which I didn't know was done?

Quantegy 456 is generally what these machines are set up for

I used Ampex 456 GM exclusively, because my TSR8 was specifically calibrated for that. I never had any issues at all from that workhorse machine....

Yep, Quantegy 456 is the stuff for the TSR-8, but...

You can also use 406 if you want some tape compression/saturation. 456 on the TSR-8 is matched to be very clean.

AGFA/BASF/EMTEC/RMGI 468 and BASF/EMTEC/RMGI 911 are also great tapes. When RMGI gets around to rolling them out again they are good alternatives.

For now, stick with new Quantegy 456 and 406.

:)

Also, for peace of mind, don't take chances with "Ampex" branded 456 tapes usually found on eBay, be it used or sealed and unused.
