Hi,
I have a TASCAM porta 03 mkII and I am recording onto CD/R's. Is there a big difference on using metal bias
tapes over CR2 bias tapes? I have allways used CR2 bias tapes. Will metal bias tapes really pick up more sound? I am recording a acoustic/electric via piezo pickup direct to my 4-track. I also am using a Yamaha D-20 drum machine, differn't analog synths. and a happy old Shure XRL to 1/4 mic. Thanks for any and all inputs.

PortaStudios are generally set-up for high-bias or chrome tapes... the are not biased for Metal, so you will not gain any sort of advantage by using them....

Sort of true. Metal biased tapes though tend to sound a bit "brighter" in my experinece. They again, I used to have a Fostex X-26 back in the day, and their heads tend to be far more accurate and sensitive then the Tascam stuff.

Boy, it has been years since I had to worry about any of that crap.

Stay with Crome bias tapes. Your record and play back heads will thank you for it.

I used to have the Tascam 4-track recorder, and I couldn't tell the difference.

But, if you have the extra money for the chrome tapes...

Stick with the chrome tapes.
