I finaly have finished getting my PC based recording studio, but I am still suffering with a bad pair of regular computer speakers. What kind of speakers/studio monitors do you reccomend I buy?

I have a Sound Blaster Live 5.1 sound card.

Are you really looking into reference monitors, or just better computer speakers?

Usable passive reference monitors can be had for $200-300, but you will of course require a reference amplifier which will run you in the $200-400 range. Another option is to look into active monitors which are basically monitors with built in amplifiers. They will typically run just about as much as seperate components of the same quality, but are simply easier to purchase and use (and arguable they might sound better since the amp is build explicitly for the monitors, but that's another topic).

Then you will need some way of controlling volume to your monitoring system. A small mixer or line preamp would work.

The type of soundcard you have isn't really much of an issue.

Slackmaster 2000

I have the same soundcard and use the Behringer 'Truth' near field monitors. They each have separate(2) built in amps for the high and low ends. I got them for $310(for the pair) and love them. I recall being told to beware of the Rolands but don't remember why...

If you dont want to spend that kind of dough, you can look at the Klipsch THX series that can be had at best buy or comp usa for around 300.00 to 350.00
Includes subwoofer and 4 sattelites. They sound pretty descent.
Their's also the 2 sattelite version for 200.00

how about a pair of decent comp speakers for 100 or less?

i assume a surround sound kit is exactly what i dont want...

-however some decent Aztec comp. speakers (2 speakers, 1 sub wolfer) are available for about 80 bucks at circuit city...you think thats alright for mixing?

I know very little about monitors except that you want the cleanest most uncolored sound you can afford. I personally wouldn't get a subwoofer to mix on. Youd probably get better quality speakers for the same money if you were not paying for the subwoofer as well. Same with the 5 piece speaker set. If your mixing stereo recordings, go with 2 speakers. One left one right.

Ive got my sound coming out of my PC into my mixing board, which is connected to my amp and monitors.

the big question is budget $$$$$$$.........how much do you wanna spend?......

I looooove my Tannoys because I haven't compared them to anything else..

Thanks everyone for your sugestions!!

I think I am looking more at a pair of active monitors.
Somewhere in the price range between $200 - $300 for both speakers.

Thanks again everyone-

save a little extra and get the truth monitors by behringer, its the best product they've made so far to me. those monitors sound great and at $399 they're hard to beat.
or ask NYMorningstar how to get them for $310...

Thanks everybody for your suggestions, I will look into some of the ones you all reccomended!!

Thanks

Id also go for a pair of Tannoy ProtoJ's and a small Samson Servo amp...
