What I mean is red book standard 16/44.1 compared to the DVD standard of today 24/48 with AC-3 compression, other wise known as dolby digital. If you think DVD then wouldn't it be benificial to artists and record companies to release albums on dvd? If you consider how many players there are out there it would be very interesting format to get into, imagine the possibilities.

While we are on the subject has anyone compared DVD-A 24/96 with the SACD format?

The DVD-A standard is actually 24/192.

What sounds better? SACD, but only if it's recorded right. The problem is that most digital recording equipment/software uses PCM, so in the end SACDs advantage is kinda lost.

In the end, I'd say it really depends on your playback environment. Playing a regular CD on a kickass system would sound much better than playing SACD or DVD-A on your average "home theater" setup.

sounds like he's not even talking about DVD-A - just audio on a regular DVD disc.

problem with DVD-A is that there aren't that many players for it out there. there are far more regular DVD players. except, no one wants to release a music album on regular DVD because... well... it's not DVD-A. the quality can't go as high either.

As far as 24/192 goes that is the new standard agreed upon lately and I didn't know that anything had been released with that resolution. So in theory the only product available as dvd-a would be 24/96 for the most part. No big deal though really.

Just found out a little bit more about DVD-A recently. There was a good article in the october issue of EQ.

DVD-Audio allows for higher resolution audio up to 24bit/192khz for stereo and 24/96 for multi-channel surround.

The reason for this post was that I just watched the new Pink Floyd live at Pompeii DVD and thought the sound quality blew away what has been released on cd. For example Echoes sounded really exotic on the dvd, and everything else sounded very very good, but Echoes is one of the better songs to use as an example due to the many sound textures and colors it goes through. Check it out!
