Hey guys,

I know this is probably a bit of an annoying question, so I apologize beforehand. I'm new and having trouble finding out exactly which way I should go with upgrading my computer. I am currently using a SB X-Fi extreme gamer sound card, which I have found out through reading other posts is complete garbage for recording music with (as well as any other SB card, but at least mine isn't false advertisement as it says gamer right in the name haha). I have a fast computer (2.6Ghz quad core, lots of ram, etc.), and am using Windows 7. I was using Cakewalk 8, but I'm having problems with my SB sound card working with it. Due to this and recent reading on the subject, I would just like to replace the card altogether.
Also, I hear people recommending the M-audio 24/96... and I also see a lot of other external sound cards (I believe they also work as the computer's sound card as well for other applications..?). I have a Behringer PMH2000 powered mixer, so I already have pre amps and inputs... so I thought maybe a system like the m-audio may be superfluous and a waste of money. I know dealing with people that are new can be very tiresome and I want to thank you all in advance and say that I would really, really appreciate any help on this (or any clarification in this area at all). Thanks!
